Cleveland Guardians Edge Detroit Tigers 4-3 in Tense Ninth-Inning Finish

In a thrilling showdown at Comerica Park, the Cleveland Guardians secured their fourth consecutive win with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. The game featured clutch hitting, defensive miscues, and a dramatic ninth-inning escape by Guardians reliever Cade Smith to seal the win.

Travis Bazzana delivered the night’s standout moment with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, giving Cleveland a 3-2 lead. His blast came just two pitches after Kyle Manzardo drew a walk off Tigers starter Keider Montero. Bazzana’s timely swing proved pivotal in a game where momentum shifted frequently.

The Tigers, however, refused to go quietly. Riley Greene, a bright spot for Detroit, sparked a rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. A single and a throwing error by Guardians catcher Austin Hedges allowed Greene to score, tying the game at 3-3. Greene has been a consistent force in the series, reaching base in eight consecutive at-bats over the first two games.

The Guardians regained the lead in the seventh inning when Brayan Rocchio drove in Steven Kwan with a groundout. Kwan, who had doubled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, crossed the plate to put Cleveland ahead 4-3.

Detroit threatened again in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out after singles by Matt Vierling and Kevin McGonigle. But Cade Smith, the Guardians’ closer, showcased his composure under pressure. Smith struck out Jahmal Jones and Dillon Dingler in back-to-back at-bats, earning his 15th save of the season and handing the Tigers their fourth straight loss.

The game was a rollercoaster from the start. The Guardians took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on Kwan’s sacrifice fly. Detroit responded in the bottom half with a two-run homer by Spencer Torkelson, his seventh of the season, off Guardians pitcher Parker Merrick.

On the mound, Cleveland’s pitching staff managed to navigate through several tight spots. Colin Holderman (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless sixth inning, while Messick pitched five innings, allowing three runs—two earned—on four hits.

For the Tigers, Montero struggled with command, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks over five innings. Reliever Tyler Holton (0-3) took the loss after surrendering the decisive run in the seventh.

The Guardians will look to continue their winning streak Wednesday night as Tanner Bibee (0-6, 4.15 ERA) takes the mound. The Tigers, meanwhile, have yet to announce their starter for the third game of the four-game series.

Tuesday’s contest was a testament to the Guardians’ resilience and ability to capitalize on key moments. With their pitching staff stepping up when it mattered most and bats delivering timely hits, Cleveland remains a force to be reckoned with in the American League.
