Bruno Mars Surprises Ohio Graduates with Free Ice Cream After Viral TikTok Campaign
HILLIARD, Ohio — Graduating seniors at Hilliard Darby High School got an unexpected sweet treat from Bruno Mars’ team after their commencement ceremony on May 19—thousands of free ice cream sundaes served outside the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
The surprise capped off a months-long social media campaign where students begged the Grammy-winning artist to attend their graduation. Their pleas began after the school rescheduled commencement to avoid clashing with Mars’ concert at Ohio Stadium on May 20.
Though the singer didn’t make an appearance, his team stepped in with a generous gesture. Principal Matt Middleton announced during the ceremony that Mars wanted to “share the love” by treating graduates to ice cream.
“While he couldn’t be here tonight, Bruno and his team wanted to make sure you felt celebrated,” Middleton told the crowd, according to a video of the event.
A Sweet Partnership with a Local Business
Atlantic Records, Mars’ label, reached out to Little Ladies Soft Serve, a small ice cream shop in Westerville, to organize the giveaway. Owner Lydia Chambers said the company contacted her through an online form after searching for central Ohio ice cream vendors.
“They told us Bruno loves supporting small businesses,” Chambers said. “It was such a cool opportunity.”
Prepping for the event was no small task. With an estimated 3,500 people to serve, Chambers and her team mobilized two ice cream trucks, a cart, coolers, and dry ice to keep everything fresh—even as rain poured during the distribution.
Despite the weather, staff kept spirits high, dancing and laughing as they handed out sundaes to graduates and families in the parking lot.
“It was chaotic but so much fun,” Chambers recalled. “Seeing everyone’s reactions made it all worth it.”
A Graduation to Remember
The TikTok campaign, which gained traction among students, was born out of disappointment when the school moved graduation to avoid conflicting with Mars’ concert. Though the singer couldn’t attend, his team’s surprise left a lasting impression.
