Eswatini Applauds Ethiopia’s Development Projects, Highlights Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Addis Ababa — Eswatini has expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s impressive achievements in executing large-scale development projects, specifically commending the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a significant milestone that showcases the nation’s determination and technical expertise.

In a recent interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Eswatini’s Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhela Dlamini, noted Ethiopia’s proactive approach to transformative initiatives that are reshaping its economy. He described the country’s ability to undertake such monumental projects independently as not just impressive, but a model for others to follow.

“The GERD is not merely a national endeavor; it serves as a blueprint for other African nations seeking greater self-sufficiency in infrastructure and energy development,” said Prince Dlamini. He emphasized that the dam represents a shift towards a more self-reliant approach for countries on the continent.

Prince Dlamini pointed out that the GERD benefits not only Ethiopia but also has the potential to be a key resource for its neighboring countries. The minister highlighted that energy sharing through the dam could foster regional cooperation, thereby enhancing economic ties within Africa.

“The electricity generated from the dam can be a lifeline for nations from the south to the north of the continent,” he stated. This sentiment underscores the notion that interconnectedness could lead to substantial economic growth across borders.

Reflecting on his recent journey to Ethiopia—his first visit in eight years—Prince Dlamini observed striking changes. He noted comprehensive improvements in various sectors, including infrastructure, roads, and water supply systems. “What I witnessed is a testament to effective governance and serves as an inspiring example for other African countries,” he remarked.

The minister praised Ethiopia’s leadership in water sustainability initiatives and clean energy, highlighting the nation’s commitment to renewable energy and large-scale afforestation. He reiterated the importance of a proactive and innovative approach to development, stating, “Ethiopia’s strategies in clean energy not only drive its own progress but offer valuable lessons for all of Africa.”

During the interview, Prince Dlamini expressed a keen interest in fostering deeper collaborations with Ethiopia, particularly in the energy sector. He underscored the significance of building partnerships that are rooted in mutual benefit and shared aspirations.

Ethiopia, with its ambitious projects and forward-thinking policies, has positioned itself as a pivotal player on the African development stage. As the continent grapples with various challenges related to energy and infrastructure, the GERD stands as a symbol of what can be achieved through collective effort and visionary leadership.

As countries across Africa strive for growth and self-reliance, the example set by Ethiopia can inspire others to pursue similar pathways. This collaboration ultimately aims to enhance not just individual nations, but the entire continent’s prospects for sustainable development.

The discussion between Eswatini and Ethiopia reflects a broader trend of African nations working together to address shared challenges and harness collective strengths. With leaders like Prince Dlamini recognizing the potential for collaboration, the future holds promise for progressive partnerships that can change the face of development in Africa.
