New Training Initiative to Enhance Gender Inclusivity in Government
The South African Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) has launched a mandatory online course focused on Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+). This initiative aims to promote gender, youth, and disability inclusivity in government operations, including planning, budgeting, and service delivery.
Designed specifically for public servants, the GBA+ course seeks to equip officials with essential analytical tools that will aid in developing inclusive and effective policies and programs. The initiative is part of a broader commitment to ensure that government initiatives are responsive to the diverse needs of all citizens, particularly those belonging to marginalised groups.
According to a department spokesperson, Cassius Selala, the new training will empower public officials to adopt an intersectional perspective when designing and evaluating policies. This lens takes into account how various factors—such as gender, age, race, disability, class, and geographic location—affect individuals’ access to opportunities and resources.
Selala highlighted the importance of this training in addressing systemic inequalities. “The GBA+ training will equip public officials with practical tools to ensure that government interventions actively reduce inequality rather than entrench it,” he said, affirming that gender mainstreaming is crucial for achieving equality within public service.
The move comes as part of a systematic effort to embed considerations related to gender, youth, and disability into all aspects of governmental work. The DWYPD views this initiative as a pivotal step toward fostering a more equitable society by addressing the persistent gaps in awareness and implementation of inclusive policies across various departments.
Public servants interested in participating in the GBA+ training can register through the department’s online learning platform. They can find more information and sign up at learning.dwypd.gov.za.
The introduction of this online course not only reflects the government’s commitment to inclusivity but also represents an urgent call for public officials to engage more thoughtfully in the development of policies that affect all South Africans.
As South Africa continues to navigate the complexities of social inequality, initiatives like the GBA+ training program play a crucial role in shaping a more equitable future. The DWYPD’s proactive approach signals a commitment to fostering a comprehensive understanding of the diverse challenges faced by different communities and ensuring that every voice is heard in the policy-making process.
With this training, the department aims to influence a culture of inclusivity in governance, where diverse perspectives are integrated into decision-making processes, ultimately leading to better outcomes for all citizens.
