Survivors Demand Aid After Deadly Gas Explosion in Nigerian Mining Site
Wase, Nigeria – The tragic aftermath of a gas explosion in the Zurak community of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, has left the families of 37 deceased miners seeking urgent assistance from both state and federal authorities. These men lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning while working underground this past Tuesday.
Survivors are still grappling with the shock of the incident. Abubakar Ibrahim, a 22-year-old miner, described the horrifying event as surreal. “When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed. I can’t recollect how I got there,” he explained, emphasizing that many of the survivors were also hospitalized in comatose states.
The grim reality of the situation is underscored by the fact that most of the deceased were family men, leaving behind numerous widows and orphans. Ibrahim urged the State Government and generous community members to come forth with support. “We are calling on everyone for help as these families are now struggling without their breadwinners,” he added.
Another survivor, Abdullahi Saleh, 37, shared his heart-wrenching story of loss, revealing he lost his father in the explosion. The traumatic event coincided with a moment of personal joy, as he welcomed a baby girl into the world just hours after the tragedy. “I don’t remember what happened during the explosion. I was in a haze when I woke up here,” Saleh recounted.
A fellow survivor, 25-year-old Aliyu Bello, described the moment of the explosion, stating he became paralyzed from breathlessness and was unable to help his colleagues. “I watched them fade away before my eyes,” he said, tears welling in his eyes. Bello called on the public for support, noting that many families are now left with not only the emotional burden but also significant financial hardships.
Volunteers working in hospitals have also raised concerns about the lack of support from Solid Unit Nigeria Limited, the company reportedly responsible for the mining site. Musa Idris, a volunteer, lamented that the company has failed to adequately care for workers since last year.
The Plateau State Government has confirmed that an explosion indeed occurred at the mining site owned by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited. The State’s Commissioner for Information, Rt Hon. Joyce Ramnap, reported that more than 30 miners were present in the tunnel during the incident, and many of them are feared to be dead. “Our government is deeply saddened by this loss and is cooperating with emergency responders to manage the situation,” she stated.
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion occurred while workers were engaged in mining activities. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with many injured individuals receiving treatment at local hospitals. The government has called for calm in the surrounding communities and urged residents to refrain from spreading unverified information that could increase fear and anxiety.
Addressing public safety in mining operations, the Commissioner emphasized the need for thorough investigations to determine the cause of the explosion. “We urge all relevant agencies to step in and enforce strict safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future,” she stated.
In a proactive step, Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal has instructed a complete shutdown of mining activities in the area until further investigations are conducted. A high-powered team from the Federal Ministry of Environment is expected to arrive in Wase on Friday to evaluate the situation.
To further emphasize the urgency of the situation, Senator Simon Lalong, representing the Plateau South Senatorial District, has also called for a thorough investigation. He expressed the need for improved safety measures in mining operations to protect lives. “We must ensure robust monitoring of the mining sector to safeguard our communities,” he remarked.
As the community mourns, survivors and families of the deceased continue to call for assistance and an overhaul of safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future. The heartbreaking impact of this disaster is a stark reminder of the dangers miners face daily.
