Africa Unveils $10 Billion Initiative to Propel AI Growth and Job Creation
In a significant move to harness the power of artificial intelligence for economic transformation, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have unveiled the ambitious AI 10 Billion Initiative. The announcement, made during the Nairobi AI Forum 2026 from February 9-10, highlights a collective effort to accelerate responsible AI adoption, fostering an inclusive digital economy across the continent.
The initiative aims to raise up to $10 billion by 2035, with a focus on generating approximately 40 million new jobs. This ambitious plan will address the vital areas necessary for expanding AI utilization, such as establishing foundational infrastructure for data, entrepreneurship, and skill development. Additionally, it emphasizes the creation of supportive policy frameworks to ensure sustainable economic growth.
The Nairobi AI Forum brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and tech innovators. Participants shared valuable insights on the importance of adopting AI solutions that not only improve productivity but also promote trust and local value creation. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to ethical AI governance and capacity-building initiatives.
Guided by a pivotal report titled “Africa’s AI Productivity Gain: Pathways to Labour Efficiency, Economic Growth and Inclusive Transformation,” the initiative will utilize a three-phase roadmap to foster AI readiness. This comprehensive framework prioritizes five interconnected enablers: data, compute resources, skills development, trust, and capital investment. The roadmap aligns seamlessly with the themes discussed at the Nairobi AI Forum, focusing on creating interoperable data ecosystems and upskilling the workforce.
Nicholas Williams, ICT Operations Division Manager at the AfDB, expressed the bank’s dedication to positioning Africa at the forefront of the AI revolution. “As a leading multilateral development institution, the AfDB is leveraging its strengths to ensure Africa keeps pace in the AI era. The AI 10 Billion Initiative sets the stage for enhanced partnerships that will drive AI entrepreneurship and bolster data and infrastructure assets across the continent,” he stated.
Similarly, Jean-Luc Stalon, UNDP Resident Representative in Kenya, emphasized the organization’s vital role in fostering private sector-led AI collaborations. He highlighted the potential for these partnerships to create jobs and enhance living standards within communities.
The AI 10 Billion Initiative is anticipated to be a pivotal step in advancing Africa’s AI landscape, with projections estimating a boost of $1 trillion to the continent’s GDP by 2035. To propel this vision forward, the AfDB plans to embark on a comprehensive roadshow over the next ten months. This engagement will involve discussions with governments, business leaders, and development partners to cultivate new alliances and funding opportunities.
As Africa stands on the brink of this digital transformation, the AI 10 Billion Initiative not only aims to create economic opportunities but also seeks to empower a generation, particularly youth and women, in the evolving tech industry. This collective action reflects a commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and sustainable progress, ensuring that the continent can reap the benefits of AI-driven growth.
The Nairobi AI Forum served as a crucial platform for these discussions, bridging gaps between various sectors and fostering an environment ripe for collaboration. As stakeholders gear up to execute this ambitious plan, the focus remains clear: to build a future where AI serves as a catalyst for economic development and social improvement across Africa.
