Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway Extension to Launch Next Month, Set for Completion by 2027

Kisumu, Kenya – The eagerly awaited extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu is set for an official launch next month, according to Philip Mainga, the Managing Director of Kenya Railways. The railway construction is expected to be completed by June 2027.

During a consultative meeting held on Tuesday with the National Land Commission and local leaders from Kisumu County, Mainga discussed plans surrounding land acquisition, compensation, and ensuring the project is aligned for a successful groundbreaking ceremony scheduled between March 18 and 20.

This ambitious 12-month initiative is fully funded by the Kenyan government, and it aims to connect Kisumu to the existing SGR line in Naivasha. Preparatory work, including surveys, has already commenced at the primary station site in Kibos, near the Kenya Pipeline Company depot.

The railway extension is anticipated to significantly ease the movement of goods across the region. By improving transport efficiency, stakeholders expect a reduction in transport costs and a boost to trade with neighboring nations such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While the railway line has been designed with future electrification in mind, Mainga emphasized that national power capacity must first be enhanced to facilitate the operation of electric trains.

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it a historic achievement. He noted that the railway extension aligns with the original vision of linking the Kenyan coast to Lake Victoria. Nyong’o also assured residents that the county government would collaborate with both the National Land Commission and local leaders to ensure transparency in the land acquisition process.

“The community will be actively involved and informed throughout this project,” Nyong’o stated, underlining the need for public participation and timely compensation during land acquisition efforts.

The consultative meeting focused on the critical importance of community engagement in order to sidestep disputes that have previously stalled significant infrastructure projects in Kenya.

As the railway extension progresses, it promises a new chapter for transport in the region with long-term economic benefits. The development has created a sense of anticipation among Kisumu residents and local businesses, who hope to leverage improved logistics to expand their reach and enhance economic opportunities.

The project not only represents a breakthrough for infrastructure in Kenya but also symbolizes a step toward tighter regional integration, fostering closer ties between countries and encouraging shared growth.

With the groundbreaking ceremony just around the corner, many are optimistic that this railway extension will fulfill its promise to transform the transport landscape in western Kenya, benefiting both local residents and neighboring countries.
