Viral TikTok Hoax: Kenyan Senator Edwin Sifuna Is Alive Amid Death Rumors

Recent TikTok videos have ignited confusion and concern after erroneously claiming that Edwin Sifuna, the senator for Nairobi City County, has tragically passed away. These clips are nothing but a deceptive ploy designed to lure unsuspecting users into dialing specific mobile codes under the guise of accessing easy money, ultimately subscribing them to costly services.

The Origin of the Rumor

Several videos circulating on TikTok purport to show breaking news segments about Sifuna’s supposed death, featuring familiar faces from Citizen TV, including anchors like Lilian Muli and Jamila Mohamed. One particularly notable clip even includes a staged scene where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and ex-presidential adviser Moses Kuria stand ominously beside a body shrouded in a white sheet—an evident fabrication.

Accompanying these sensational claims is an invitation to viewers to “Get Bridge loan” by dialing codes beginning with #811#. The message suggests that individuals can easily withdraw up to KSh10,000 through the popular mobile money platform, M-Pesa, but this is a deceptive marketing tactic.

Misleading Content Exposed

While the posts have attracted attention, amassing over 89,000 views, they have only garnered a handful of comments—a sign that skepticism may be setting in. The text urging viewers to call specific numbers is part of a common scam strategy seen on social media platforms, with creators relying on shocking headlines to generate clicks while misleading viewers.

Background on Edwin Sifuna

Edwin Sifuna serves as Nairobi’s senator and is also recognized as the secretary general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He has been an active figure in Kenyan politics, known for vocalizing his dissent against the current government led by President William Ruto, especially following the 2024 youth-led protests that saw ODM form an unpopular coalition with Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance.

Recently, Sifuna has participated in various public rallies aimed at advocating for citizens’ rights, often referring to his group and its objectives as “Linda Mwananchi,” meaning “protect the citizen.” However, these events have not been without struggle; many of his rallies have faced disruptions, including tear gas and violence, leading him to accuse the government of intimidation.

The Truth Comes to Light

Despite widespread panic, claims regarding Sifuna’s death are unfounded. He remains actively engaged in public discussions and even made a recent appearance on NTV Kenya’s morning show, consistently updating his active social media platforms. Not a single trustworthy news outlet has confirmed the rumors of his death, further underscoring their falsehood.

An in-depth examination of the videos reveals numerous inconsistencies. For instance, although various Citizen TV journalists appear, they appear to be victims of a manipulated audio overlay, where the voice does not match the anchors’ lip movements—suggesting a voice modification technique was employed.

The footage featuring Gachagua and Kuria alongside a covered body stems from a May 2023 funeral scene, where they were mourning a different individual—Mukami Kimathi, spouse of renowned freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi. There is no connection to Sifuna or his supposed demise.

How to Deal With Possible Deception

TikTok and similar platforms are increasingly being exploited for fraudulent schemes, where users receive instructions to dial mobile codes resulting in paid subscriptions rather than the promised rewards. For those who have unknowingly subscribed, there are ways to de-activate these services. Users can dial *811#, choose “Manage my tune,” and delete any active tunes. Alternatively, sending “DELETE” followed by the Skiza code to 811 or contacting customer care at 100 can effectively cancel the service.

In summary, the alarming rumors of Edwin Sifuna’s death are baseless. He continues to be a prominent figure in Kenya’s political landscape, devoted to advocating for citizens’ rights amidst ongoing political upheaval.
