Tragic Mosque Attack in Kebbi State Claims Five Lives

Sokoto — A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday night in the Dadinkowa community of Maiyama Local Government Area, Kebbi State, when suspected Lakurawa terrorists launched an attack on a mosque during Taraweeh prayers. This brutal assault resulted in the deaths of five worshippers and left three others injured, prompting widespread concern over safety in the region.

The grisly attack is believed to be a retaliation linked to a failed ambush that occurred earlier this year. On February 24, the convoy of Maj.-Gen. Bemgha Koughna, the General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, faced heavy gunfire from terrorists thought to be associated with the Lakurawa group. This prior attack was met with a strong response from Nigerian Army troops, who managed to neutralize five of the assailants, thwarting the ambush and preventing further harm.

SP Bashir Usman, the Kebbi Police Public Relations Officer, shed light on the recent mosque attack. He confirmed that following the foiled ambush, the terrorists targeted the mosque, showing a troubling pattern of reprisal attacks against civilians. “The attack was a reprisal by suspected Lakurawa terrorist elements following a failed ambush on troops of the Nigerian Army attached to the 8 Division,” Usman stated.

Witnesses described the scene inside the mosque, which was filled with worshippers partaking in their evening prayers. The sudden eruption of gunfire left the community in chaos and disbelief. As news of the attack spread, fear gripped the region, particularly in rural areas that have become increasingly vulnerable to violence from armed groups.

The injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. Local healthcare providers have mobilized resources to assist the victims, but the emotional toll on families and the community is profound.

This attack has ignited renewed discussions about security provisions in Kebbi State, particularly in its rural areas where law enforcement and military presence can be minimal. Community leaders are calling for urgent actions to enhance security measures and protect worshippers during religious gatherings.

The cycle of violence poses a significant challenge for both local residents and authorities. With each attack, communities face the daunting task of maintaining trust in their safety and support systems. It remains crucial for local and national governments to address the root causes of such violence and bolster efforts to prevent future reprisals.

As tension escalates in Kebbi State, the need for a unified front against terrorism and armed groups becomes increasingly pressing. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities to help curb the growing threat.

The aftermath of this tragic assault emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced security strategies in vulnerable regions of Nigeria. Community resilience, alongside governmental action, will be vital for restoring peace and safety.
