Nigerian Politician’s Alleged Video Claim Debunked as Clickbait

A series of Facebook posts have circulated lately, falsely claiming that Nigerian politician Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai released a video where he accuses President Bola Tinubu of “eating children for presidential sacrifice.” This sensational story appears to be a manipulative tactic designed to drive users to certain websites and social media profiles, rather than a factual account.

The misleading posts gained traction in late February 2026, beginning with claims of a video dropping from El-Rufai, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape and former governor of Kaduna state from 2015 to 2023. These posts suggested that El-Rufai would not remain silent and that no politician could survive the fallout from his revelations. Specifically, it claimed that El-Rufai asserted that Tinubu had committed “atrocities worse than all African leaders combined.”

The narrative around El-Rufai has become more complex in recent months. After announcing his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in March 2025, he soon switched allegiances again, aligning himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Despite these political maneuverings, El-Rufai’s criticism of Tinubu’s administration has often been highlighted, especially following the refusal of the Nigerian Senate to confirm him as a minister.

However, despite the sensational headlines, investigations have found no evidence of El-Rufai releasing any such video. The political commentary he has made regarding Tinubu has been widely covered in the media, particularly following his senator snub, but there is no support for the outrageous claims circulating online.

The posts failed to specify where or when El-Rufai supposedly made these alarming accusations. Many users who clicked on the links provided in the posts were directed to unrelated websites that had no connection to the supposed scandal. The aim behind these posts is clear: they serve as clickbait, utilizing shocking and fabricated tales to lure people into visiting specific sites or following particular Facebook pages.

As misinformation continues to spread rapidly through social media, this particular claim has been flagged as entirely false. It is critical for users to exercise caution when encountering sensational news and verify claims through credible sources. Social media can be a powerful tool for communication, but it can also serve as a platform for misleading stories that manipulate public perception.

In a politically charged environment like Nigeria, where misinformation can influence public opinion and political stability, awareness and critical thinking are essential. Users should fact-check news they encounter, especially sensational claims that could easily be debunked.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its complex political landscape, the spread of misleading information presents ongoing challenges for politicians, media, and citizens alike.
