Escalating Violence in Plateau State: Amnesty International Calls for Urgent Action
In a chilling development in Nigeria’s Plateau State, armed youths recently enacted road blockades along the Nding route in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, resulting in the tragic deaths of four travelers. This incident, described by rights organization Amnesty International as a part of a troubling pattern of violence, has raised alarms regarding the safety of citizens in the region.
Amnesty International issued a statement on Wednesday, urging the Nigerian government to undertake a thorough investigation into these series of road blockades and the associated killings. The organization highlighted the urgent need to address what it termed an “endemic security crisis” in Plateau State, warning that ongoing violence threatens the fundamental rights to life and freedom of movement for travelers.
This recent incident was further complicated by a subsequent reprisal attack in Dorowa Babuje village, where at least seven individuals lost their lives. These frequent outbreaks of violence have instilled fear in local communities, making inter-community travel perilous, particularly for traders who rely on these routes for their livelihoods.
In its statement, Amnesty referenced previous attacks, notably an incident in June 2022 when a mob killed 12 travelers in Plateau State and another in August 2021, where 22 commuters were murdered along Rukuba Road after returning from an Islamic event. It criticized the ongoing lack of accountability for perpetrators of such heinous acts, asserting that this has only emboldened would-be attackers.
As these violent incidents unfolded, traders traveling from Jos to Pankshin for their weekly shoe business became victims, further deepening community concerns. Reports indicate that the burial of the deceased was conducted on Monday evening at the Sabon Anguwa cemetery, deliberately away from their immediate communities in Jos North to avoid escalating tensions. Eyewitness accounts confirm that six traders were attacked, with only two survivors.
Danjuma Ibrahim, a youth leader in Barkin Ladi, recounted the sequence of events, stating, “We received the bodies for burial on Monday afternoon. The funeral was held here to quell tensions in Jos, as the incident had already sparked fears among residents.” He reiterated calls for calm and urged for prompt action from the government and security agencies to address the growing violence in the region.
The aftermath of the killings ignited unrest in Jos, with local youths demanding the release of the bodies of their relatives. Security personnel were subsequently deployed to maintain order amid the rising tension. This cycle of violence, including attacks and retaliations, has left the community in a state of uncertainty, particularly evident in Barkin Ladi and surrounding areas.
As reported previously, at least ten people were killed in the Ratatis community, which community leaders denounced as a retaliatory strike. This pattern of escalating violence has led to increased fears among residents and traders dependent on safe travel for economic activities.
In response to the alarming situation, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed security agencies to intensify operations aimed at apprehending those responsible for the recent outbreaks of violence. Despite these efforts, the prevailing atmosphere of fear reveals deeper systemic issues within law enforcement and governance in Plateau State.
Amnesty International has underscored that mere deployment of security forces is insufficient; it called for comprehensive measures to bridge accountability gaps and to ensure the safety of all citizens against such attacks. The organization emphasized the state’s ongoing failure to provide secure travel conditions on public roads, a situation that continues to disrupt the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals in the region.
As residents of Jos and Barkin Ladi continue to grapple with the ramifications of these violent acts, many express that true stability will depend not only on arrests but also on visible and effective prosecution of those responsible for these brutal killings. It is a pressing concern that echoes the cries for justice and security from communities in Plateau State, longing for a return to normalcy and safety.
