Edo Police Sweep Yields Arrest of 113 Suspected Kidnappers in Major Operation
In a significant crackdown on kidnapping networks, the Edo State Police Command, in collaboration with various security agencies, apprehended 113 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping activities. This extensive operation took place in the early hours of Thursday across the Edo Central Senatorial District.
The operation, dubbed “Zango,” targeted specific locations where intelligence indicated that kidnappers and their associates were coordinating ransom payments. Led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, the mission included personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), along with local vigilante groups and hunters.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eno Ikoedem, the police launched a comprehensive security initiative aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the state. The focus was on notorious areas known for harboring kidnappers on the outskirts of Agbede and Iruekpen.
“Acting on credible intelligence, we took decisive action against identified ‘Zango’ locations—places where suspects would gather to receive ransom payments and regroup,” Ikoedem stated. “Our coordinated effort was crucial in achieving this significant feat.”
The police carried out meticulous raids on several targeted settlements, which yielded the apprehension of 113 suspects. All parties are now undergoing thorough profiling to determine their respective levels of involvement in criminal activities. Authorities have assured the public that all findings will lead to appropriate legal action against those found culpable.
In addressing the community, CP Agbonika emphasized the ongoing commitment of the Edo State Police to combat organized crime, specifically focusing on kidnapping. “Our fight against these networks will be relentless,” he stated. The Commissioner reiterated that not only armed suspects in the forests would be targeted, but efforts would also be intensified to dismantle the financial and logistical support systems that empower these criminal networks.
He called for community vigilance, urging residents to remain proactive in reporting any suspicious activities. “All information received will be treated confidentially,” he assured the public, underscoring the importance of community involvement in enhancing security.
“The Edo State Police Command stands firm, resilient, and ever-ready to protect lives and property within our jurisdiction. Let me make it clear: there will be no haven for kidnappers or their collaborators in Edo State,” the Commissioner declared.
This operation serves as a significant reminder of the continuous fight against kidnapping and organized crime in Nigeria, highlighting the crucial partnership between local authorities and community members in ensuring safety and security.
As the police continue their investigations, there is a palpable sense of hope in the community for a safer environment where families can live without the fear of kidnapping and violence.
