Military Foils Kidnap Attempt in Benue, Rescues Three Passengers

In a significant operation on Wednesday night, soldiers from the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, successfully prevented a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu-Otukpo Road in Benue State. The military operation resulted in the rescue of three individuals from a state-owned transport bus.

According to Ahmad Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the task force, troops acted on intelligence reports indicating that an 18-seater Benue Links bus, with the registration number TYK 221 YK, had been seized by armed suspects. Zubairu’s statement, released on Thursday, details the swift actions of the military following the distress signal.

“Troops of Sector 1 under Operation Whirl Stroke successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu-Otukpo Road, rescuing three victims without casualties,” Mr. Zubairu noted. At the time of the incident, the bus was carrying four passengers and a minor.

Upon receiving the report, soldiers stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Otukpo quickly mobilized to the area and engaged in a chase of the suspected kidnappers along their escape route. Their timely intervention forced the assailants to abandon three of the hostages.

Despite the lack of direct confrontation during the pursuit, the operation yielded the recovery of a mobile phone believed to belong to the suspects. However, the fate of one remaining passenger and the minor, both of whom were also on the bus during the kidnapping attempt, has not yet been clarified by military officials.

The Enugu-Otukpo corridor has become notorious for security incidents, including frequent kidnappings and attacks on travelers. Local news reports highlight a disturbing trend of armed groups targeting vehicles on major routes in Benue State, prompting an increase in security patrols. Operation Whirl Stroke has been actively conducting patrols and focused operations in Benue and neighboring states to address this escalating issue.

The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke praised the troops for their vigilance and quick response, stating that their actions prevented the situation from worsening. “Motorists should remain cautious and attentive while traveling, particularly at night,” he advised.

Furthermore, motorists have been urged to be watchful for any unusual activity, particularly in stretches of road where vehicular movement is limited. Mr. Zubairu emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious circumstances to the nearest security agency to facilitate prompt action.

As security forces intensify efforts against kidnappings and related crimes throughout the state, they continue to call on citizens to assist by sharing timely information. The military aims to create a safer environment for motorists in the often-precarious terrain of Benue State, where incidents of violence have become increasingly common.

The ongoing collaboration between the military and local communities is crucial in combating the surge in criminal activities and securing the safety of residents and travelers alike.
