Miami of Ohio Triumphs Over Western Michigan, Extends Unbeaten Streak to 29 Games

Kalamazoo, Mich. — In a thrilling showdown that left fans on the edge of their seats, No. 21 Miami of Ohio secured a narrow 69-67 victory against Western Michigan on Friday night. Trey Perry’s dramatic driving layup with just one second remaining cemented the RedHawks’ stunning comeback, propelling them to a remarkable 29-game winning streak at the season’s outset.

The victory not only solidified Miami’s position as the only undefeated team in NCAA Division I men’s basketball but also marked the team’s best start in program history. With this win, Miami extended their record for the most victories in a single season and showcased their dominance in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Peter Suder led the RedHawks in scoring with 18 points before fouling out mid-second half. Almar Atlason and Perry contributed significantly with 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Eian Elmer chipped in with 10 points. Their cohesive teamwork and tenacity underscore the squad’s ability to thrive under pressure—a characteristic that has defined their season.

Western Michigan put up a fierce challenge, with Jayden Brewer scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Justice Williams and EJ Ryans each added 14 points, proving instrumental in keeping the game competitive. However, despite their efforts, the Broncos were unable to fend off a resilient RedHawks team that has become adept at winning close encounters, having claimed seven of their victories this season by six points or fewer.

The game began with Western Michigan leading at halftime, 30-26, and extending their advantage to eight points twice early in the second half. After a series of back-and-forth exchanges, Miami managed to tie the game at 49-all with just over ten minutes left. Western Michigan surged ahead once more, establishing a 57-49 lead with eight minutes remaining, but Miami remained undeterred.

A steady accumulation of points allowed the RedHawks to claw their way back, with Antwone Woolfolk’s pivotal layup giving Miami a one-point lead at 66-65 with just 14 seconds on the clock. Elmer’s free throw moments later seemed to put Miami in a comfortable spot at 67-65. Yet, in a testament to the game’s high stakes, Western Michigan tied the score again with a quick basket from Williams, only for Perry to deliver the decisive blow moments later.

This game is not merely a statistic on Miami’s winning streak but a showcase of character and resilience in the face of adversity—a quality that head coach Jack Owens has instilled in his squad. “We have been in tight games all season. It’s important to have players who can step up when the pressure is on,” Owens commented after the game.

The implications of this victory extend beyond weeknight matchups in the MAC. With only a handful of games left in the regular season, Miami of Ohio is positioning itself as a formidable contender for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Their potent combination of experience, skill, and mental toughness could very well translate into unprecedented postseason success.

Looking ahead, Miami will host Toledo on Tuesday, and while the stakes remain high, their focus will undoubtedly be on preserving their remarkable unbeaten streak. Meanwhile, Western Michigan will aim to rebound as they host Ball State on the same night, searching for a momentum shift as the season approaches its climax.

As the college basketball landscape begins to shape up for March Madness, all eyes will be on the RedHawks. With their undefeated record, Miami of Ohio continues to defy expectations and carve out its place in collegiate basketball history.
