RedHawks Thrive: Miami (Ohio) Extends Winning Streak to 30 Games with Victory Over Toledo

COLUMBUS, Ohio — In an electrifying showdown on Tuesday night, the No. 19 Miami (Ohio) RedHawks secured a 74-72 victory against the Toledo Rockets, inching closer to a flawless regular season with their 30th consecutive win. With this triumph, Miami remains the only undefeated team in Division I men’s basketball, confirming its dominance in collegiate athletics this season.

The game marked a significant milestone for the RedHawks, who are now 17-0 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), extending what is already the best start in the program’s history. Their relentless performance has also earned them the distinction of holding the longest winning streak in MAC history, further solidifying Miami’s standing as a powerhouse in college basketball.

Key performances defined the night, with Pete Suder leading the scoreboard with 19 points, followed closely by Antowne Woolfolk, who contributed 14. Brant Byers and Luke Skaljac also made significant impacts, adding 13 and 12 points respectively. The RedHawks showcased exceptional skill and teamwork, enthralling a sellout crowd of 10,640 at Millett Hall, where they continued their home dominance by extending their winning streak to 31 games—an achievement matched only by Duke in terms of national records.

Toledo, with a record of 16-4 and sitting at 10-7 in the conference, fought valiantly, with Leroy Blyden Jr. leading their charge with 21 points and Sonny Wilson contributing another 13. However, despite various attempts to close the gap, they were unable to swing the momentum in their favor. The Rockets fell behind early, as Miami established a double-digit lead from the outset—a position they were never to relinquish.

The Rockets demonstrated resilience and a fighting spirit throughout the game, coming within a single point on four occasions. A pivotal moment arrived with nine minutes remaining when Austin Parks attempted a drive to the basket that appeared poised to flip the script. However, Miami’s Eian Elmer thwarted the effort with a spectacular defensive play, subsequently securing a three-pointer that pushed the RedHawks’ lead back to four points.

As the clock wound down, the Rockets faced an uphill battle. With just 13 seconds left and down by two points, Toledo had possession, but disaster struck when they turned the ball over with less than a second left on the clock. This error sealed their fate, handing Miami a gripping victory and marking the RedHawks’ first season sweep over Toledo since the 1996-97 season. This win has also stitched together a series winning streak for Miami, which has triumphed in three consecutive matchups against the Rockets after previously enduring a 22-game losing streak from 2012 to 2024.

Looking ahead, Miami is set to travel to Ohio University this Friday, where they will aim to further extend their winning streak and continue their march toward NCAA tournament glory. Meanwhile, the Rockets will host Buffalo on the same day, seeking to rebound from their narrow defeat and regain momentum in the MAC standings.

The implications of Miami’s extraordinary season are significant not only for the team and its fans but also for college basketball enthusiasts. As the RedHawks build towards a potential NCAA tournament bid, their storied performances and resilience in the face of adversity could pave the way for deeper playoff runs. A perfect regular season could also elevate their status in the eyes of national rankings and basketball pundits, prompting discussions about their potential to disrupt the establishment in March Madness.

In a landscape where upsets are commonplace, Miami’s exceptional performance could serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of the sport, building anticipation as the season progresses. As fans and analysts alike prepare for the upcoming postseason, all eyes will undoubtedly be on this relentless RedHawks squad as they chase history.
