Somalia’s Federal Parliament Approves New Constitution, Marking a Historic Milestone

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a pivotal development for the Horn of Africa nation, Somalia’s federal parliament has officially adopted a new Constitution, completing a comprehensive review and amendment process. This significant step involves pivotal changes across Chapters 1 to 13 of Somalia’s governing framework.

During a joint session of both legislative chambers—the House of the People and the Upper House—members of parliament overwhelmingly supported the Constitution. A total of 223 lawmakers cast their votes, with 186 from the House of the People and 37 Senators from the Upper House backing the historic document.

Chaired by Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, the session culminated in a resounding endorsement. After announcing the results, the Speaker declared the Constitution officially in effect across the nation. “The Official Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia has been legally adopted and will now take effect across the country,” he stated confidently.

Lawmakers hailed this moment as a landmark achievement in establishing a solid constitutional framework, reinforcing democratic institutions, and supporting Somalia’s federal system of governance. “This is a historic step for Somalia,” said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar, who is also a parliament member. He emphasized that the revised document marks substantial progress in the country’s journey towards strengthening democratic institutions and moving away from the long-standing provisional framework.

The amendment process that led to this landmark approval has been deemed vital for clearly delineating the powers between federal and regional authorities. It aims to enhance democratic governance while contributing to the stability of institutions vital for a cohesive political landscape.

The approval of the Constitution signals a renewed commitment to Somalia’s nation-building efforts and lays groundwork for long-term political stability in a country that has faced decades of turmoil. Observers believe that a clear and well-defined constitutional framework is essential for nurturing a politically stable environment where citizens can securely express their democratic rights.

As Somalia strides forward, this adoption represents more than just a document; it symbolizes hope for a united nation eager to build a brighter future. By consolidating its federal structure, Somalia aims to drive progress in economic development and social cohesion, essential elements for revitalizing its rich history and heritage.

Residents of Somalia are anticipating what this development will mean for their everyday lives. For many, the Constitution offers the promise of improved governance, with a clearer distribution of responsibilities between federal and regional governments, which is expected to improve service delivery across the nation.

Despite the challenges that lie ahead, including the task of translating constitutional principles into practical governance, this constitutional adoption marks a hopeful turn in Somalia’s historical journey. As the nation embarks on this new chapter, the world watches closely, hopeful that Somalia will emerge as a model of democratic resilience in the region.

The adoption of the Constitution stands as a triumphant point in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to fortify its governance structure and advance a long-term vision for stability and prosperity.
