Media organizations condemn the killing of Abshir Khalif Shide Omar, calling for an urgent investigation into the fatal shooting.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its Somali affiliate, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), have strongly condemned the killing of journalist Abshir Khalif Shide Omar, demanding an immediate and transparent investigation into his death.

Omar, a respected Somali journalist, was fatally shot under unclear circumstances while returning from an Iftar gathering with colleagues. He had just finished editing a program about politicians, which was set to air that night. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, with NUSOJ stating that the details of the incident are still under investigation.

Outcry from Media Advocates

NUSOJ Secretary General Omar Faruk Osman expressed deep concern over the killing, emphasizing the broader implications for press freedom. “When a journalist is killed under such circumstances, it raises serious questions about the safety of media workers and the accountability of law enforcement,” he said.

The IFJ echoed these concerns, with General Secretary Anthony Bellanger calling the shooting “unacceptable and unwarranted.” He stressed that such violence against journalists must not go unpunished. “We demand a full investigation into Abshir’s killing. Attacks on journalists are attacks on democracy itself,” Bellanger declared.

Police Response and Calls for Justice

Jubbaland Police spokesperson Captain Shukri Farah Du’ale confirmed that the officer responsible for the shooting has been detained and will face legal proceedings. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

Omar’s death marks the first killing of a journalist in Somalia this year, reigniting fears over the dangers faced by media workers in the country. Press freedom advocates warn that impunity for such crimes could further endanger reporters working in high-risk environments.

Global Solidarity

The IFJ and NUSOJ have extended their condolences to Omar’s family and the Somali media community, urging authorities to take swift action. Media watchdogs worldwide are closely monitoring the case, emphasizing the need for accountability to protect journalists and uphold press freedom.

As investigations continue, Somali journalists and international organizations remain vigilant, calling for justice to prevent further tragedies.
