SUNBURY, Ohio — For the second straight year, the Big Walnut High School girls’ basketball team is charging into the Division II state semifinals—and this time, they’re determined to rewrite the ending.

Last season’s heartbreaking overtime loss in the Final Four has fueled the Eagles all year. Now, backed by a fiercely loyal Sunbury community, they’re ready to take the next step.

A Town United

In Sunbury, supporting Big Walnut athletics isn’t just tradition—it’s a way of life. Local businesses, families, and classmates have rallied behind the team, turning their playoff run into a shared mission.

“The community support is insane,” said junior Sydney Mobley. “There’s so much they do for us.”

At Big Walnut Apparel, owner Mike Garee has spent a decade supplying the town with Eagles gear. For him, it’s personal. “I’ve lived here my whole life,” Garee said. “It’s great to give back and be part of something bigger.”

Fueled by Last Year’s Heartbreak

The memory of their 2023 semifinal loss lingers. Players have rewatched the game repeatedly, using it as motivation.

“We’ve worked ten times harder this season—on conditioning, on everything—to make sure we don’t slip away again,” Mobley said.

Senior Lexi Federer echoed the sentiment: “Falling short last year made us hungrier. Now we’re back, and we want a different result.”

More Than Just a Game

From packed stands to local buzz, Sunbury’s pride is unmistakable. Even the boys’ basketball team has turned out to cheer on their classmates.

“It’s been really nice having everyone behind us,” Federer said.

For Garee and other lifelong residents, the team’s success is a point of collective pride. “It’s exciting for them—and for the whole community,” he said.

As the Eagles prepare for Friday’s semifinal, they carry more than just their own ambitions. They’re playing for Sunbury.
