Ogun State’s Gateway International Airport Set to Launch Hajj Pilgrim Airlift Operations
Ogun State is poised to make aviation history as its Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo prepares to handle its first international operation: the airlift of Muslim pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. This milestone marks a significant step in the state’s ambition to become a major aviation and logistics hub in Nigeria’s South-West region.
For years, residents of Ogun and neighboring states had to travel to Lagos to catch domestic and international flights. However, the completion of the Gateway International Airport, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, is set to change that narrative. The airport, built to high engineering and aesthetic standards, is gradually transitioning to full operational capacity, with Hajj flights slated to be its debut international service.
Preparations for a Seamless Launch
Governor Abiodun has spearheaded high-level consultations with federal agencies to ensure the airport meets all regulatory, operational, and security requirements before commencing international services. Key agencies involved include the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Dapo Olumide, the airport’s Aviation Consultant and Accountable Manager, has been tasked with leading these discussions. Officials from the NDLEA, Customs Service, and Immigration Service have already visited the facility to assess its readiness and outline the necessary security and operational measures.
Gbenga Dairo, Ogun State’s Commissioner for Transportation, confirmed that the airport has been certified by the NCAA for domestic commercial flights and possesses the infrastructure and management capacity to handle international operations, including Hajj flights.
“Representatives from various security and regulatory agencies have assessed the airport and expressed satisfaction with its facilities,” Dairo said. He added that a temporary pilgrims’ camp will be set up at the airport to process approximately 500 pilgrims departing for Saudi Arabia.
Hajj Operations Take Center Stage
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has already inspected and approved the airport for Hajj operations, signaling confidence in its readiness. The Ogun State Muslim Welfare Board is finalizing arrangements to facilitate the airlift of pilgrims directly from the state.
Uyiekpen Asuen, an NCAA representative, confirmed that Gateway International Airport meets all operational standards and is among the 17 airports across Nigeria designated for Hajj operations.
Security agencies have pledged full cooperation to ensure smooth Hajj flights. A strategic meeting held at the airport in Ikenne Local Government Area brought together representatives from the NDLEA, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other agencies to outline operational requirements and assess facilities.
Economic and Regional Impact
Beyond Hajj operations, the Gateway International Airport is expected to boost regional connectivity, making it easier for travelers and businesses in Ogun State and neighboring areas to access international flights. The airport is also anticipated to support cargo movement and international trade, providing a competitive edge for investors and businesses operating in the state.
Officials believe the facility will complement the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while positioning Ogun as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation and logistics sector.
As Gateway International Airport moves closer to full operational capacity, it is set to transform Ogun State’s aviation landscape, bringing the world closer to the Gateway State.
