Tensions Flare at Mogadishu Hotel as Security Forces Detain Guards After Shooting Incident

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A brief but intense shooting incident at Hotel Dayax in Mogadishu’s Waaberi district has led to the detention of multiple security personnel, including members of Somalia’s Public Guards and hotel security staff. The altercation, which occurred late Tuesday, has sparked investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and raised concerns about security in the volatile capital.

According to police sources, the incident began when a man dressed in civilian clothing entered a restricted area at the rear of the hotel. Members of the Public Guards, stationed at the location, allegedly drew their weapons on the individual, escalating the situation. The man reportedly returned shortly afterward with additional hotel security personnel, leading to a tense exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic but brief. “It all started when the man entered the restricted zone. Within minutes, he came back with more security guards, and the shooting began,” one eyewitness told Shabelle Media.

Authorities swiftly intervened, and the CID took control of the investigation. All personnel involved in the altercation, including soldiers and hotel guards, have been detained for questioning. Police have yet to confirm any casualties or injuries resulting from the incident, and the identity and motives of the man in civilian clothing remain unclear.

The hotel, located in the heart of Mogadishu, is a popular destination for both locals and international visitors. The incident has further highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the Somali capital, where armed clashes between security forces occasionally erupt in public spaces.

“This serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of maintaining law and order in Mogadishu,” said a local security analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Hotels and other high-profile locations often become flashpoints for tensions among armed personnel.”

This is not the first time Mogadishu has witnessed such incidents. In recent years, hotels have been frequent targets of attacks by armed groups, forcing businesses to heighten security measures. However, Tuesday’s altercation appears to have stemmed from internal tensions rather than an external threat.

The CID has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue. “We are working diligently to uncover the full details of this incident,” a police spokesperson said. “We ask for patience and cooperation as we strive to ensure the safety of all residents.”

The detention of both Public Guards and hotel security personnel underscores the gravity of the situation. Analysts suggest that such incidents could erode public trust in security forces, which play a critical role in stabilizing the city amid ongoing threats from extremist groups.

Hotel Dayax remains operational, but the incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of security protocols at high-risk locations. “We need a long-term strategy to prevent such occurrences,” said a local businessman. “Hotels are vital to our economy, and incidents like this can deter both investors and tourists.”

As Mogadishu continues its fragile recovery from decades of conflict, Tuesday’s shooting serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges ahead. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address security gaps and restore confidence among residents and visitors alike.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities expected to release further details in the coming days.
