Kenyan Sprinter Mercy Oketch Eyes Glory at World Indoor Championships in Poland
NAIROBI, Kenya – March 20, 2026
Kenyan athlete Mercy Oketch is determined to leave her mark at the 2026 World Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze, Poland, as she competes in her debut appearance at the prestigious event. The 23-year-old sprinter, representing the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has already advanced to the women’s 400m semi-finals, fueling hopes of a podium finish.
Oketch secured her spot after finishing second in Heat 6 on Friday, clocking an impressive 51.57 seconds. She trailed behind the Czech Republic’s Lurdes Gloria, who won the heat in 51.08 seconds. Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic narrowly missed qualification, finishing third with a time of 52.15.
Despite her inexperience at this level, Oketch remains optimistic. “I’m still hoping for the best. This is my first time in such a high-level competition, and I’m learning with every race,” she told reporters.
The rising star has been on an upward trajectory in 2026, securing podium finishes in all her races this season. She triumphed at the Leichtathletik International Meeting and Metz Indoor Meeting, while also earning bronze at the World Indoor Tour Madrid.
This isn’t Oketch’s first taste of international competition. Last year, she represented Kenya at the World Relays in Guangzhou, China, and the World Championships in Tokyo. She was part of the 4x400m relay team that placed fourth in Guangzhou before reaching the semi-finals in Tokyo.
As she prepares for the next round, Kenyan fans are rallying behind her, hopeful that she can deliver another standout performance. With her steady rise in the sport, Oketch is quickly becoming a name to watch in global athletics.
