Côte d’Ivoire Positions Itself as Africa’s Extractive and Energy Hub with SIREXE 2026 Launch

On Monday, March 23, 2026, Côte d’Ivoire took a bold step toward reshaping its economic future with the official launch of the second edition of the International Exhibition of Extractive and Energy Resources (SIREXE). The event, held at the prestigious Congress Hall of the Hôtel Ivoire in Abidjan, underscored the nation’s ambition to diversify its economy beyond agriculture and establish itself as a leading destination for international investment in the extractive and energy sectors.

Attended by the country’s top officials and Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, the event marked a pivotal moment in Côte d’Ivoire’s economic strategy. The government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging its natural resources to drive sustainable development and create lasting opportunities for its citizens.

A Rising Star in West Africa
Côte d’Ivoire’s growing influence in the extractive sector was a focal point of the event. Vice Prime Minister Téné Birahima Ouattara, representing the Head of Government, highlighted the nation’s impressive performance in the Fraser Institute’s mining attractiveness rankings. The country now ranks first in West Africa and fifth across the continent, a testament to its efforts to improve the business climate and attract foreign investment.

The gold sector, in particular, has emerged as a standout success story. Thanks to structural reforms and a favorable investment environment, Côte d’Ivoire has become one of the most competitive destinations for gold mining. This progress reflects the government’s determination to maximize the value of its natural resources while ensuring transparency and accountability.

Hydrocarbons Sector Gains Momentum
The hydrocarbons sector is also experiencing remarkable growth. Between 2025 and 2026, Côte d’Ivoire became one of the world’s top six hubs for extractive production investment, mobilizing over $500 million in capital. This surge is largely driven by the game-changing discovery of the “Baleine” oil field in September 2021, which has revitalized the national oil industry.

Since the discovery, the government has signed 19 production-sharing contracts, with 13 additional agreements currently under negotiation. Beyond the financial figures, these developments are expected to create thousands of jobs, foster skills transfer, and stimulate industrial growth across the country.

SIREXE 2026: A Platform for Collaboration
Scheduled to take place from November 18 to 22, 2026, at the Abidjan Exhibition Centre, SIREXE 2026 aims to serve as a strategic platform for dialogue and cooperation. This year’s edition will focus on the infrastructure needed to support the growth of the extractive sector, both nationally and across Africa.

Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy, emphasized the unique role of SIREXE as the only bilingual international event of its kind. By bringing together public decision-makers, investors, industrial players, and researchers, the exhibition seeks to foster a shared vision for transforming the extractive sector into a fully industrialized powerhouse.

Challenges Ahead
While the opportunities are immense, the government acknowledges the challenges of turning this potential into sustainable and inclusive growth. Effective management of natural resources will be critical to ensure that the benefits reach local communities and contribute to long-term development.

Côte d’Ivoire’s ambitious strategy represents a significant shift toward economic diversification. By prioritizing the extractive and energy sectors, the country aims to reduce its reliance on agriculture and create a more resilient and dynamic economy.

As SIREXE 2026 approaches, all eyes will be on Côte d’Ivoire to see how it navigates this transformative journey. With its sights set firmly on the future, the nation appears poised to become a key player in Africa’s extractive and energy landscape.
