UN Report Alleges Genocide by Sudan’s RSF in Darfur Conflict
A new report from a United Nations fact-finding mission has leveled serious accusations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, alleging that their actions in Darfur constitute genocide. This claim emerges following the RSF’s siege and takeover of the city of el-Fasher, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing civil conflict that erupted in April 2023.
The United Nations gathered evidence through more than 320 interviews with survivors, as well as corroborative imagery, leading them to conclude that the violence perpetrated by the RSF was both systematic and coordinated. Notably, names have been dropped in the report, including that of RSF leader Lt Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti. The report suggests that both Hemedti and his spokesperson have publicly lauded the assaults, casting a dark shadow over the RSF’s operations.
Yvette Cooper, the UK’s Foreign Secretary, described the findings as “horrific” and committed to presenting them before the UN Security Council. She is advocating for criminal investigations into the allegations, the enforcement of an arms embargo in the region, and heightened international pressure for a ceasefire. The conflict in Sudan has largely stemmed from a power struggle between the national army and the RSF regarding the integration of the paramilitary forces into the country’s security framework.
The RSF, which has yet to comment on the UN report, has consistently rejected earlier accusations of wrongdoing and human rights violations. However, the latest findings have escalated concerns in the international community about the dire humanitarian situation in Darfur, where widespread violence has led to displacement and suffering for countless civilians.
Background of the Conflict
The civil war in Sudan has roots in a fierce power struggle following the ousting of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The struggle for power between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, especially in vulnerable regions like Darfur.
The humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with many fearing that the systematic violence outlined in the UN report will exacerbate the suffering of an already beleaguered population. In light of these developments, rights groups are urging immediate intervention from the international community to avert further atrocities.
This report brings renewed focus to Darfur, a region that has historically suffered from brutal conflicts. The international community remains on high alert as they grapple with the implications of these recent findings.
