Ethiopian Prime Minister Celebrates Special Operations Command’s 65th Anniversary

Addis Ababa — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed honored the capabilities of Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command during a grand ceremony marking its 65th anniversary at the Hawassa International Stadium. The elite airborne forces, distinguished by their iconic red bonnets, were praised by Abiy for embodying “purpose in one wing and discipline in the other.”

The event attracted senior military officials, members of the defense establishment, and a host of dignitaries, reinforcing the importance of the Special Operations Command in Ethiopia’s national defense strategy. Abiy described the airborne forces as “exceptional gifts of Ethiopia,” emphasizing that they reflect the country’s rich culture, language, and identity.

“These heroic figures are not just fighters,” Abiy stated. He highlighted that the elite forces serve as champions of peace, carrying the green, yellow, and red flag of Ethiopia — symbols of hope and freedom on the African continent.

As he spoke to the gathered audience, the Prime Minister made a compelling case for the importance of a long-term vision aimed at creating a sustainable and effective military institution. He underscored the Command’s role in safeguarding the nation and its potential contributions to transforming Ethiopia into a more secure and resilient state.

“Ethiopia’s strength lies in the dedication of its children,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preserving the nation’s dignity, sovereignty, and freedom for future generations. His remarks came amidst a broader context of regional stability and cooperation across Africa, which Abiy asserted are central priorities for his administration.

The Prime Minister emphasized Ethiopia’s aspiration to act as a protective shield for its neighbors, striving for peace and prosperity from Somalia to Massawa. He pointed out that the elite forces are equipped with advanced technology, positioning them not only as defenders of the nation but also as proactive agents against strategic regional threats.

Abiy congratulated East African nations and the greater continent, presenting the airborne forces as pivotal in contributing to collective security efforts. He noted that the Command’s core mission is to prevent conflict and terrorism, enabling rapid responses to emerging crises and fostering a stable environment both regionally and internationally.

Revisiting the legacy of the Special Operations Command, he underscored its unwavering commitment to uphold the honor represented by the red bonnet, the national flag, and the dignity of Ethiopia. The forces continue to serve with distinction, both domestically and in international missions.

In his conclusion, Abiy remarked on the successful integration of modern technology and disciplined training within Ethiopia’s defense forces. He expressed confidence that these capabilities make them a steadfast bastion of peace for Africa, continuing a proud tradition of resilience and regional engagement.

As the anniversary celebrations wrapped up, the event served not only as a reminder of the Command’s storied history but also as a hopeful vision for the future stability of Ethiopia and its role in African affairs.
