Somaliland Water Officials Embark on Landmark Visit to Israel for Training

Hargeisa, Somaliland — In a significant development for Somaliland’s water sector, the Director General of the Ministry of Water Development, Aden Abdela Abdule, has led a delegation of 25 water professionals to Israel. This trip marks the first high-level technical engagement ever since Israel recognized Somaliland as a sovereign nation on December 26, 2024.

The purpose of this visit is to participate in an intensive training program focused on national water resources planning and management. Officials believe that enhancing institutional capacity is crucial for ensuring long-term water security in Somaliland, a region grappling with chronic water shortages.

During their stay, Aden Abdule held extensive discussions with senior officials from the Israel Water Authority. These conversations centered on key areas such as integrated water resource management, regulatory frameworks, and innovative technologies for digital monitoring. A focal point of the discussions was large-scale desalination models, a pressing need for Somaliland, where water scarcity is a significant challenge.

In addition to his meetings at the Israel Water Authority, Abdule also met with Dr. Eynat Shlein, the head of MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation. This meeting aimed to explore broader technical cooperation and capacity-building initiatives linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

One highlight of the visit was an extensive tour of Israel’s state-of-the-art desalination facilities and advanced wastewater treatment plants. The delegation gained valuable insights into water recycling technologies and efficiency systems. Officials stated that this exposure to Israel’s advanced national water management model is expected to be instrumental in addressing Somaliland’s ongoing water crisis, especially in drought-prone areas.

The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing the strengthening diplomatic and developmental ties between the two regions. Aden Abdule remarked, “This marks the first official Director General-level visit since recognition and reflects a new phase of structured cooperation between our two sides.”

Water scarcity remains a critical issue in Somaliland, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas and regions vulnerable to drought. Experts believe that collaborating with Israel, a world leader in desalination technology and water innovation, could significantly enhance Somaliland’s resilience in water management and sustainable resource utilization.

Looking ahead, both Somaliland and Israel are poised to formalize more technical partnerships and expand training opportunities in the coming months. This initiative demonstrates a shared commitment to improving water security, a fundamental need for the people of Somaliland, whose livelihoods often depend on reliable access to water.

The engagement underscores the potential for transformative change in how Somaliland manages its water resources, with Israel’s advanced expertise serving as a beacon of hope amid enduring challenges.
