WACO Education Center Opens in Ohio, Paving the Way for STEM Learning and Future Innovators

DAYTON, OHIO — While Dayton proudly holds the title of the Birthplace of Aviation, just 30 minutes north lies another significant site poised to inspire the next generation of aviators and engineers. The newly inaugurated WACO Education Center, part of a long-standing initiative to merge the fascination of aerospace with practical education, promises to become a cornerstone of STEM learning for students in Miami County.

For years, the WACO Aerobotics team, comprised of enthusiastic middle and high school students, has been involved with robotics and aviation. However, they often struggled to find a dedicated space for their activities, relying on temporary arrangements that limited their potential. “We’ve sort of been somewhat nomadic, having to tuck away our equipment in a storage facility and then roll it back out into a public area,” explained Marcus Duff, one of three coaches guiding the team. The opening of the new education center marks a significant shift, providing a “forever space” for students to explore their passions without the constraints of a transient setup.

The WACO Education Center, situated adjacent to the historic WACO Air Museum, is designed to cater to a diverse array of interests. “It could also be a place for people with a marketing and artistic skill set to find a place,” Duff added, emphasizing the center’s inclusive approach toward education.

The center houses an advanced aviation lab and simulator, complemented by ample classroom space intended for hands-on learning. Nancy Royer, Executive Director of the WACO Education Center and Air Museum, highlighted the important role history plays in the educational experience. “The history is what’s propelling us forward; it’s what’s igniting and fueling the interest in aviation,” she said. Visitors to the nearby museum can learn about the WWII significance of WACO aircraft, further enriching students’ understanding of their heritage.

Community support has been instrumental in bringing the center to life. Funding has been secured through generous donations from local philanthropic foundations, volunteers, and pilots who are passionate about promoting aviation education. Each year, these pilots participate in fly-ins where they connect with students, sharing valuable knowledge about WACO airplanes and the broader field of aviation.

The establishment of the WACO Education Center marks a vital development for local families. Royer acknowledged the challenges busy families face, saying, “With parents juggling hectic schedules, having a local program accessible to these families makes all the difference.” The center’s location eliminates the burdensome travel required for other programs, making STEM education more feasible for all interested students.

The impact of the center extends beyond immediate learning. As the WACO Aerobotics team prepares for the upcoming state championship in March, they benefit from the newfound sense of ownership and pride in their work. “The kids are very excited, and they’ve enjoyed seeing the facility develop,” said Duff, noting how the space has energized students and fueled their ambitions.

The future implications of the WACO Education Center are promising. By fostering a strong STEM foundation, the center aims to equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world. Moreover, it serves as a model for other regions looking to invest in similar educational initiatives that combine historical significance with the demands of contemporary education.

As community engagement continues to grow and more students access this enriching environment, the WACO Education Center stands to produce a new generation of innovators ready to take to the skies and lead in various fields. With a solid foundation laid, the center is not just a new educational facility; it is a beacon of opportunity for aspiring young minds in Ohio and beyond.
