Nairobi’s Mutuini Hospital Expansion Set to Open in April, Enhances Local Healthcare Services

Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja visited the newly expanded Mutuini Hospital in Dagoretti South on Monday, confirming that the 400-bed facility is slated to officially open in April. This significant upgrade transforms the hospital from a 40-bed unit to a comprehensive healthcare provider, now equipped with an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), as well as enhanced outpatient services and specialized clinics designed to serve the local community better.

During the visit, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to modern healthcare, announcing that an investment of KSh 400 million will go towards equipping the facility with state-of-the-art medical equipment, ensuring that it operates at full capacity from day one. “Patients registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) will receive services free of charge,” he stated, highlighting the hospital’s accessibility for underserved populations.

With the opening of Mutuini Hospital, the city aims to alleviate pressure on other local healthcare facilities such as Mbagathi Hospital, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Kikuyu Level 4 Hospital, and Pumwani Maternity Hospital, which have been suffering from overcrowding due to rising patient numbers. President Ruto expressed hope that this expansion would provide much-needed relief, saying, “This 400-bed facility will serve many and decongest our existing hospitals.”

Governor Sakaja, speaking alongside President Ruto, characterized this project as a fulfillment of their shared vision under the “Ruto-Sakaja pact,” specifically aimed at improving service delivery. “We promised that we would finish the construction of Mutuini Hospital, and today I can confirm that we shall open it next month,” he said. He emphasized that the goal extends beyond just constructing buildings; it is crucial that these facilities are adequately equipped and staffed to effectively serve the people.

The visit also included a commissioning ceremony for a newly completed workshop block at the PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, reinforcing Nairobi’s commitment to enhancing technical and vocational education. In addition, President Ruto announced a further investment of KSh 250 million to construct hostels that will accommodate 580 trainees. “Education is the greatest equaliser,” he said, noting that expanding skills training is vital for empowering the youth in Nairobi.

In a move to bolster the education sector, the leaders officially handed over 17 new classroom blocks, which include a tuition block at Kawangware Primary School. Highlighting ongoing efforts in educational renovations, President Ruto mentioned that approximately 800 classrooms have been constructed across Nairobi over the past year, along with the hiring of 1,000 teachers designed to improve learning outcomes.

The tour also spotlighted broader infrastructural initiatives in the city, part of an ambitious KSh 80 billion investment plan aimed at upgrading roads, improving drainage systems, enhancing water supply and sanitation, enhancing street lighting, and modernizing trading spaces. Governor Sakaja explained that the collaborative effort between national and county governments, bolstered by public participation, is intended to expedite long-delayed projects and significantly improve service delivery throughout the capital.

“Nairobi’s budget is about KSh 40 billion, but this cooperation is bringing in an additional KSh 80 billion for development,” Sakaja stated, urging that the city must align with other major cities globally. “We are committed to elevating Nairobi’s status. We will keep working closely with the President, and we are already witnessing positive impacts across our roads, markets, hospitals, and other key sectors.”

The visit concluded with the leaders affirming their resolve to continue pressing forward on these critical developments, demonstrating a collaborative spirit aimed at improving the quality of life for residents in Nairobi. Other city officials accompanied them during this important inspection and commissioning tour.
