Mosiuoa Lekota, COPE Founder and Former Minister, Passes Away at 77

South Africa is mourning the loss of Mosiuoa Lekota, the founding member of the Congress of the People (COPE), who passed away at the age of 77. The announcement of his death was made by the party, which has urged the public to respect the family’s request for privacy during this challenging time.

In a heartfelt statement, COPE expressed its condolences not only to Lekota’s family but also to all South Africans who feel the weight of this loss. “On behalf of leadership, membership, and supporters of COPE, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lekota family and all South Africans who mourn this loss,” the party’s statement read.

Lekota had previously stepped back from public life in 2022 due to ongoing health issues, prompting COPE to appoint Teboho Loate as the interim leader. His decision marked a significant turning point for the party, as Lekota had long been a guiding force in South African politics.

Born on December 3, 1945, Lekota was an influential figure in the country’s transition to democracy. He served as the first Premier of the Free State province from 1994 to 1996 and held the position of Defence Minister from 1999 to 2008. Over the years, Lebota was not only known for his political acumen but also for his dedication to improving the lives of South Africans.

Following the news of his passing, many prominent figures have paid tribute to him. Trevor Manuel, a close friend and fellow political figure, remembered Lekota as an “amazing human being” who was “deeply committed” to the nation. Manuel’s words reflect a shared sentiment among many who knew Lekota personally and professionally—his drive for a better South Africa was undeniable.

The former Minister of Parliament leaves behind a legacy fueled by a commitment to social justice, democracy, and the upliftment of marginalized communities. His contributions to the newly democratic South Africa were vast; he played a pivotal role in shaping policies and advocating for reforms aimed at fostering equality and inclusion throughout the country.

Lekota’s funeral will take place in his hometown of Bloemfontein, allowing family, friends, and supporters to gather and honor his remarkable life and work. As South Africa reflects on Lekota’s legacy, it also contemplates the future of COPE and the larger political landscape that he helped to shape.

In recent years, COPE has faced challenges and criticisms, prompting discussions about its direction. Lekota’s absence leaves a noticeable void, but many hope that his vision can continue to inspire future generations of leaders dedicated to equity and progress.

As the nation remembers Mosiuoa Lekota, his contributions and sacrifices will not be forgotten. He remains an emblem of South Africa’s long journey toward healing and unity, displaying the values of resilience and commitment in the face of adversity.

Lekota’s impact will surely resonate for years to come, serving as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for a better future for all South Africans.
