Akron Zoo Welcomes Rare Yellow-Backed Duikers Finn and Silvie
AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Zoo is celebrating the arrival of two extraordinary newcomers: Finn and Silvie, a pair of yellow-backed duikers. This addition marks the first time the zoo has hosted this unique species, offering visitors a chance to learn about and observe these rare antelopes native to Africa.
Finn, a playful one-year-old born on June 10, 2024, arrived from the Los Angeles Zoo, while Silvie, a more experienced four-year-old born on December 6, 2021, made her journey from the Audubon Zoo in Louisiana. The duo will soon settle into their new home in the Landon & Cynthia Knight Pride of Africa exhibit, sharing space with white storks and guineafowl in a mixed-species habitat designed to mimic their natural environment.
A Tale of Two Personalities
Despite sharing a species, Finn and Silvie couldn’t be more different in temperament. Silvie is described as outgoing and curious, often engaging with her surroundings and caretakers. Finn, on the other hand, is more reserved, taking his time to explore and adapt to his new environment. “Silvie is very sociable and confident, while Finn is a bit more cautious,” a zoo spokesperson shared.
These contrasting personalities add depth to the exhibit, offering visitors a glimpse into the diverse behaviors of yellow-backed duikers.
A Species in Peril
Yellow-backed duikers, native to western and central Africa, are classified as “threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Their populations have declined due to habitat destruction, deforestation, and human-wildlife conflict.
The Akron Zoo’s decision to house Finn and Silvie is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the plight of these animals and support conservation initiatives. “By bringing Finn and Silvie here, we hope to educate our visitors about the challenges these animals face in the wild,” the spokesperson added.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
While Finn and Silvie have already settled into their new home, they won’t make their public debut until the weather warms up consistently. The zoo is preparing for an enthusiastic response from visitors eager to see these rare creatures up close.
The Landon & Cynthia Knight Pride of Africa exhibit is designed to provide a naturalistic environment that encourages the duikers to thrive. The exhibit’s mixed-species setup aims to replicate the diverse ecosystems these animals inhabit in the wild, fostering a sense of harmony and balance.
What’s Next for Finn and Silvie?
As the zoo awaits warmer temperatures, caretakers are closely monitoring Finn and Silvie’s adjustment to their new surroundings. Visitors can expect to learn more about the duo’s unique behaviors, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting threatened species.
This addition to the Akron Zoo highlights the institution’s commitment to wildlife preservation and education. Finn and Silvie’s arrival not only enriches the zoo’s offerings but also serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect endangered species worldwide.
