Mozambique Swears in Four Women Leaders in Key Government Roles
Maputo, Mozambique – In a historic move, Mozambican Prime Minister Benvinda Levi on Thursday inaugurated four women into prominent leadership positions, signaling a strong commitment to gender equity and women’s empowerment.
The newly appointed officials include Olga Manjate, who takes charge as General Inspector of Labour; Ernestina Chirinda, appointed Chairperson of the Labour Mediation and Arbitration Commission (COMAL); Lucia Luciano da Cruz, named General Director of the Agricultural Promotion and Rural Extension Fund (FAR); and Farida Abdula Urci, who will head Maputo Central Hospital as its General Director.
Prime Minister Levi praised the appointees for their proven dedication and technical expertise. “These women have demonstrated exceptional competence in handling the responsibilities entrusted to them,” she said during the swearing-in ceremony. She emphasized that their appointments reflect the government’s dedication to advancing gender equality and empowering women across all sectors.
A Modernized Approach to Labour and Agriculture
Levi outlined the critical roles each leader will play in shaping Mozambique’s future. The General Inspectorate of Labour, led by Olga Manjate, will focus on ensuring compliance with labor laws, promoting decent work conditions, and safeguarding the rights of both employees and employers. Levi stressed the need for a modernized labor directorate capable of addressing emerging challenges, including technological advancements and evolving labor practices.
“Workers and employers must find a State institution that operates with competence, impartiality, and integrity,” Levi added. The Inspectorate will also prioritize workplace safety, hygiene, and health standards to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with regulations.
Ernestina Chirinda’s role at COMAL will involve mediating labor disputes through non-judicial solutions, emphasizing dialogue, flexibility, and consensus-building. Levi highlighted the importance of COMAL in fostering harmonious labor relations and preventing protracted legal battles.
Lucia Luciano da Cruz will helm FAR, tasked with driving agricultural growth and rural development. Levi described FAR as a “strategic instrument” for transforming Mozambique’s agricultural sector, urging its leadership to mobilize credit lines tailored to productive cycles and ensure financial sustainability.
Healthcare Leadership in Focus
Farida Abdula Urci’s appointment as General Director of Maputo Central Hospital underscores the government’s focus on strengthening healthcare services. Urci will oversee one of the country’s largest medical facilities, with a mandate to enhance patient care, improve operational efficiency, and uphold medical standards.
Prime Minister Levi emphasized that the success of all four leaders will depend on their ability to foster teamwork, embrace creativity, and manage public resources transparently. “Your leadership must be guided by integrity and adherence to the law,” she advised.
A Step Toward Gender Equity
The appointment of these four women marks a significant step in Mozambique’s efforts to achieve gender parity in leadership roles. Levi reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering women and ensuring their active participation in national development.
The event has been widely praised by advocates for gender equality, who see it as a milestone in Mozambique’s journey toward inclusive governance.
