Deadly Clash in Nasarawa State Leaves Three Dead Amid Escalating Tensions

A violent confrontation erupted in the Maraba Gurku community of Nasarawa State on Wednesday morning, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. The clash, which began around 9 a.m. in the Aso A area, stemmed from a dispute between a mobile police officer and a herder, escalating into a deadly reprisal attack.

According to local sources, the conflict ignited when a herder allegedly entered the police officer’s compound with his cattle and began cutting down a mango tree to feed the animals. Eyewitnesses reported that the officer confronted the herder, leading to a heated argument that culminated in the officer fatally shooting the trespasser.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control. Enraged by the killing, associates of the deceased herder mobilized approximately 50 individuals and descended on the officer’s residence, setting it ablaze. Amid the chaos, a neighbor who arrived at the scene was reportedly shot dead during the retaliation.

Residents described scenes of panic and confusion as gunshots echoed through the neighborhood. “We heard shouting and gunfire,” a local resident told Premium Times on condition of anonymity. “When we rushed out, we saw that a group of herders had stormed the mobile policeman’s home.”

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel. In a telephone interview from Lafia, Nansel explained that the initial report involved the discovery of a Fulani herder’s corpse. Investigations revealed that the herder had attempted to cut down a mango tree, prompting a vigilante member to fire the fatal shot.

“The vigilante member has been arrested,” Nansel stated, adding that the arrival of military reinforcements led to further casualties. A confrontation between soldiers and herders resulted in two additional fatalities. The injured were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Nansel emphasized that the police are mediating with affected families and community leaders to prevent further reprisal attacks. “The commissioner of police has deployed additional security personnel to the area, and normalcy has been restored,” he assured.

The incident highlights the simmering tensions between herders and local communities in Nigeria, a recurring issue often fueled by disputes over land and resources. Authorities are now focused on maintaining peace in the region as investigations into the clash continue.
