ABUJA, Nigeria — A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kabiru Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The order came after Turaki repeatedly failed to appear in court to face charges of providing false information to the police.

Justice Peter Kekemeke granted the warrant on Thursday, citing Turaki’s absence despite being properly notified of the hearing. The case stems from a petition Turaki filed in 2022, which authorities allege contained misleading details.

The Charges

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) filed a one-count charge against Turaki, accusing him of violating Section 140 of the Penal Code. Court documents state that on October 5, 2022, Turaki allegedly submitted a petition containing false information to the IGP. The charge, registered as FCT/HC/CR/647/25, was formally filed on November 15, 2025.

Police prosecutor Usman Rabiu urged the court to invoke Section 143 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, which allows for the arrest of defendants who evade trial.

Legal Delays and Judicial Frustration

The case was initially assigned to Justice K.N. Ogbonnaya but was later transferred to Justice Kekemeke after Turaki petitioned the Chief Judge, claiming bias. Justice Ogbonnaya had previously refused to issue an arrest warrant, but the new presiding judge expressed frustration over Turaki’s continued non-appearance.

“There is no justification for the defendant’s absence,” Justice Kekemeke stated before ordering Turaki’s arrest and immediate production in court.

Political Implications

Turaki, who served as Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs from 2013 to 2015, remains a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. His legal troubles come amid internal PDP disputes, where he leads a faction of the opposition party.

Legal analysts suggest the case could further destabilize the PDP ahead of future elections. Meanwhile, Turaki’s supporters claim the charges are politically motivated.

Next Steps

Authorities are now tasked with executing the arrest warrant and bringing Turaki before the court for formal arraignment. If convicted, he could face penalties under Nigeria’s Penal Code.

The case has drawn significant public interest, with many Nigerians watching closely to see how the judiciary handles the high-profile matter.
