Columbus Blue Jackets Crush Montreal Canadiens 5-2 in Critical Playoff Push

MONTREAL — In a high-stakes clash on Saturday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets kept their playoff hopes alive with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Forward Charlie Coyle shone with two goals, leading the charge as Columbus fights for its first postseason appearance since 2020.

The Blue Jackets, currently two points behind the Philadelphia Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division, delivered a strong performance across the board. Boone Jenner, Sean Monahan, and Kirill Marchenko each found the net, while Adam Fantilli contributed with two assists. Between the pipes, Jet Greaves made 20 saves to secure the win.

For Montreal, Cole Caufield continued his stellar season, netting his 51st goal, while Josh Anderson added another. Despite the loss, the Canadiens remain playoff-bound, though they slipped from second to third in the Atlantic Division due to a tiebreaker with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who hold more regulation wins. Both teams have 104 points, trailing the division-leading Buffalo Sabres (106 points) with two games left in the regular season.

The game wasn’t without its physical toll. Montreal defenseman Noah Dobson left the ice in the second period after blocking a Zach Werenski slap shot with his left hand. Later, rookie Ivan Demidov was sent to the dressing room following a collision with Werenski but returned to finish the game.

Columbus’s victory was a testament to their determination. With the playoffs just out of reach, every game is a must-win. “We’re fighting for every point,” said Coyle after the match. “This group believes in itself, and tonight showed what we’re capable of.”

Montreal, meanwhile, will look to bounce back as they head to New York to face the Islanders on Sunday. The Canadiens, despite their playoff berth, are still jockeying for seeding in a tightly contested Atlantic Division.

For Columbus, the road ahead remains challenging. They’ll host the Boston Bruins on Sunday in another critical matchup. With the postseason within sight, the Blue Jackets are leaving nothing to chance.

As the regular season winds down, every shift, shot, and save could mean the difference between extending the season or going home early. For now, Columbus is choosing to fight.
