Gorge Dam Removal Progress Update: Community Invited to Key Meeting

Progress So FarWhat’s Next?A Long-Awaited Effort

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Summit Metro Parks has announced an upcoming community meeting to update residents on the Gorge Dam removal project, a landmark effort decades in the making. The event, scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, will take place at the Akron-Summit County Public Library and promises to shed light on the project’s progress and next steps.

The Gorge Dam, a towering 60-foot-tall, 420-foot-wide structure, has been a focal point of environmental restoration efforts in Gorge Metro Park. Summit Metro Parks officials have emphasized that the dam no longer serves any functional purpose and poses a significant water quality challenge for the Cuyahoga River. Its removal is expected to restore the river’s natural flow, enhance wildlife habitats, and improve recreational opportunities for the community.

Progress So Far

The project, now in its second phase, involves the relocation of dredged sediment to a secure off-site location. This phase began last year and marks a critical step in the multi-stage process. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is overseeing the cleanup, resumed sediment removal efforts last month after a winter pause caused by freezing temperatures. Over the course of the project, the EPA anticipates extracting more than 850,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment from the river.

“This dam removal is one of the largest unresolved water quality issues facing the Cuyahoga River,” said Summit Metro Parks officials. “Removing it will bring profound ecological benefits and restore the Gorge to its natural state.”

What’s Next?

The project is divided into four phases, with the final three expected to span seven years. Phase 3 will focus on dismantling the concrete dam structure, while Phase 4 will restore the river channel and rehabilitate the surrounding landscape to its original condition.

The April 28 meeting will provide residents with a detailed progress report and an opportunity to ask questions. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the presentation running from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A Long-Awaited Effort

Planning for the dam’s removal has been underway for decades, reflecting the complexity and significance of the project. Summit Metro Parks has long advocated for the dam’s removal, citing its environmental impact and potential benefits to the community. Once complete, the project is expected to transform the Gorge Metro Park into a cleaner, more vibrant natural space.

Residents and environmental enthusiasts alike are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about this historic undertaking and its implications for the region’s ecosystem and recreational landscape.
