Ohio Launches 2026 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program: $50 for Fresh Local Produce

Key Details for ApplicantsSupporting Seniors and Local FarmersWhy It Matters

Ohio seniors struggling with food costs will soon have extra help putting fresh, local produce on their tables. The state’s popular Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) returns next week, offering eligible residents $50 in benefits for fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey at participating markets.

Key Details for Applicants

  • Enrollment opens: Wednesday, April 22, at noon
  • Deadline: Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m.
  • Eligibility: Ohioans aged 60+ earning under 185% of the federal poverty level
  • How to apply: Online via the Ohio Department of Aging

For the 2026 season, participants can opt for digital benefits through a smartphone app or receive a physical card if they’re new to the program or lost last year’s. However, seniors in eight Appalachian counties—including Athens, Hocking, and Washington—will still use paper coupons instead of the app, distributed through the Buckeye Hills Regional Council.

Supporting Seniors and Local Farmers

The program isn’t just about nutrition—it’s a lifeline for Ohio’s agriculture. By directing funds to local growers, the SFMNP boosts small farms and markets while ensuring older adults access healthier food.

“This program helps seniors eat better while supporting Ohio’s farmers,” said Ursel J. McElroy, Director of the Ohio Department of Aging. “It’s a win-win for our communities.”

Why It Matters

With food prices still high, the SFMNP provides critical relief. Many seniors on fixed incomes skip fresh produce due to cost, leading to poorer health outcomes. The $50 benefit, while modest, can make a meaningful difference—especially when spent at farmers’ markets, where dollars stretch further.

Farmers and markets interested in joining can contact the Ohio Farmers Market Network at Senior@ohiofarmersmarketnetwork.org.
