Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament Unites Granville Middle School, Sparks Joy

GRANVILLE, Ohio — What began as a simple classroom activity transformed into a school-wide phenomenon at Granville Middle School, proving that even the most basic games can bring people together in extraordinary ways.

The brainchild of eighth-grader Harper Babaryk, a rock-paper-scissors tournament swept through the school, creating an electric atmosphere that students and staff alike won’t soon forget. What started as a casual competition in individual classrooms eventually escalated into a gymnasium-packed showdown, complete with cheering crowds and unforgettable moments.

“We wanted to do something that could bring everyone together,” Babaryk explained. “Making the school more enjoyable can really help someone’s day.”

The tournament’s impact was immediate. Classrooms buzzed with excitement as students faced off in quick rounds of the classic hand game. By the time the final match rolled around, the gym was alive with energy, laughter, and thunderous applause.

“It was the loudest and most excited I’ve seen the student body in a long time,” said Chris Williams, the school’s assistant principal. “It was really, really fun.”

For seventh-grader Jacob Shively, the experience was unforgettable. “It made me happy,” he said, mimicking his winning move with a triumphant “Rock… pow!”

Babaryk didn’t want the fun to end in the gym. She recorded the tournament and shared it online, spreading the joy beyond the school walls. “Sometimes people just don’t have great days,” she said. “Doing something positive or fun can really help and make people happier.”

The event wasn’t just about competition—it was about connection. Students who might not usually interact found themselves cheering each other on, forging new bonds in the process. Even those who didn’t make it to the finals left with smiles on their faces, having been part of something special.

Beyond the laughs and cheers, Babaryk hopes the tournament leaves a lasting message. “Don’t just wait for fun things to come to you,” she said. “Make fun things for other people to do.”

As the tournament concluded, the positivity it sparked lingered throughout the school. Teachers noted a renewed sense of camaraderie among students, while classmates reminisced about their favorite moments from the competition.

In a world where distractions and divisions often dominate, Granville Middle School’s rock-paper-scissors tournament stands as a reminder that sometimes, the simplest ideas can have the most profound impact.

“It brought people together in a way we haven’t seen in a while,” Williams added. “It was a reminder of how much fun we can have when we all come together.”

For Harper Babaryk and her classmates, the tournament wasn’t just a game—it was a celebration of community, kindness, and the power of a little creativity.
