Cleveland Embraces Polish Tradition with Vibrant Dyngus Day Celebration
Cleveland, Ohio — This Monday, the city of Cleveland came alive with the colorful and spirited celebration of Dyngus Day, a cherished Polish holiday observed the day after Easter. Marking its 15th year in Cleveland, the festival has become a beloved tradition, drawing hundreds of attendees to honor Polish heritage and enjoy the festivities.
Dyngus Day, also known as Śmigus-Dyngus, has its roots in Poland and is traditionally a day of joy and merriment after the solemn period of Lent. In Cleveland, the celebration has grown into a vibrant community event, complete with music, dancing, and plenty of Polish flair.
Bob Darden, a longtime attendee, summed up the spirit of the day. “It’s about celebrating Polish heritage and the end of Lent,” he said. “It’s a time to go out and have a great time with friends and family.” Darden has been attending the festival for years and even organizes a bus to bring 60 people from the east side of Cleveland to the festivities.
One of the highlights of Cleveland’s Dyngus Day is the crowning of Miss Dyngus Day, an ambassador for the festival who helps spread Polish culture and joy throughout the community. Last year’s winner, Christine Przybysz, has embraced her role with enthusiasm.
“The role of Miss Dyngus is to be an ambassador for the festival,” Przybysz explained. “It’s about going out, finding Polish festivals around town, and spreading joy and fun wherever we go.”
Przybysz also shared how the festival has deepened her connection to her heritage. “I grew up celebrating Dyngus Day with my family, but I always thought it was a made-up festival because I didn’t know anyone else who celebrated it,” she said. “When this festival started, it was so much fun to come and celebrate with the community and share the heritage and traditions with so many people.”
The celebration is a visual feast, with attendees donning red and white, the colors of the Polish flag. The vibrant atmosphere is filled with music, traditional Polish foods, and activities that bring people of all ages together.
For many, Dyngus Day is more than just a festival—it’s a way to connect with their roots and celebrate the enduring Polish spirit in Cleveland. As the city continues to embrace this tradition, the festival serves as a testament to the thriving Polish-American community and its rich cultural contributions.
Whether you’re Polish or simply looking for a fun way to celebrate the end of Lent, Cleveland’s Dyngus Day offers a welcoming and joyous experience for all.
