CINCINNATI — With Election Day fast approaching, Hamilton County officials are scrambling to fill critical poll worker vacancies needed to ensure a smooth voting process. The Board of Elections is calling on registered voters and eligible high school students to step up and serve as Precinct Election Officials (PEOs).

Who Can Be a Poll Worker?

Poll workers play a vital role in democracy, helping voters cast their ballots efficiently. According to Sherry Poland, Director of the Hamilton County Board of Elections, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen and registered voter in Hamilton County or a high school student aged 17+
  • Be proficient in English
  • Comfortable using basic electronic voting equipment
  • Not a candidate in the current election
  • No felony convictions

Both Republicans and Democrats—as well as non-affiliated voters—are encouraged to apply, especially in high-need precincts.

Where Are Workers Needed Most?

The May 5 election faces staffing shortages in several key areas:

Republicans or Non-Affiliated Voters Needed In:

  • Springfield Township
  • Anderson Township
  • Cincinnati (city precincts)
  • Loveland
  • Symmes Township

Democrats or Non-Affiliated Voters Needed In:

  • Harrison Township
  • Delhi Township
  • Loveland
  • Symmes Township
  • Anderson Township

Pay and Commitment

Poll workers earn between $225 and $275, covering mandatory training, setup, and a full day at the polls. Training ensures workers are prepared to assist voters and operate equipment.

High school students who qualify can gain firsthand civic experience while earning money—an opportunity Poland says helps “build the next generation of engaged citizens.”

How to Apply

Interested applicants can find full details and sign up at the Hamilton County Board of Elections website.

With early voting already underway, election officials stress that filling these roles quickly is essential to avoid delays on Election Day.

“Every election depends on everyday people stepping forward,” Poland said. “Your community needs you.”
