Deadly Bus Crash on South Africa’s N1 Highway Claims Lives of Zimbabwean Passengers

Makhado, Limpopo – A cross-border bus carrying Zimbabwean nationals veered off the road and plunged into a ditch early Wednesday morning along the treacherous N1 highway near Makhado, leaving multiple fatalities feared.

The accident occurred on a notorious stretch of the N1, close to where a similar crash last year claimed 43 lives—mostly Zimbabwean and Malawian migrants. The winding, mountainous terrain with sharp turns has long been flagged as one of South Africa’s most dangerous road sections.

Limpopo transport spokesperson Mashu Mabata confirmed the incident, stating, “A Zimbabwean-registered bus lost control and crashed near Ingwe Motel. Emergency teams are on-site, and the road has been temporarily reopened.”

Emergency Response Underway

Police, traffic officers, and paramedics rushed to the scene to assist survivors and manage traffic disruptions. Authorities urged motorists to proceed with extreme caution, as visibility and road conditions remain hazardous.

“We advise drivers to slow down in this area. Further updates will follow,” Mabata added.

Repeat Tragedies Raise Safety Concerns

The deadly crash has reignited fears over the safety of cross-border transport along the N1 corridor, particularly near Musina and Makhado, where fatal accidents occur frequently. Advocacy groups have called for improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of speed limits to prevent further tragedies.

The identities of the victims and the exact death toll remain unconfirmed as investigations continue.
