University of Cincinnati Leads Ohio in AI Education with Secure “BearcatGPT” Platform
The University of Cincinnati (UC) has become the first higher education institution in Ohio to launch a secure, AI-powered platform designed exclusively for students and faculty—and the response has been overwhelming.
Since its rollout earlier this year, BearcatGPT has seen a rapid surge in users, offering AI-driven tools that help with studying, exam prep, and daily organization. The platform, developed over two years, prioritizes privacy, ensuring that student and faculty data never leaves UC’s secure servers.
A Game-Changer for Students
BearcatGPT provides a suite of specialized tools, including Bearcat Study Pal, Bearcat Test-Prepper, and Bearcat Genius, all tailored to enhance learning efficiency. Unlike public AI chatbots, the platform keeps queries and content confidential—a critical feature for protecting intellectual property and sensitive academic work.
“This gives the UC community access to private AI tools without exposing data to the public domain,” said Bharath Prabhakaran, UC’s Vice President and Chief Digital Officer. “We’re leveraging AI’s power while maintaining security.”
Faculty Embrace AI Innovation
The initiative isn’t just for students. Professors like Kelly Cohen, an aerospace engineering expert, are actively refining AI applications for fields like medicine, robotics, and aviation. The goal? Making AI transparent and reliable for real-world use.
Josette Riep, UC’s Associate Vice President of Integrated Data, Engineering & Application Services, emphasized the university’s commitment to staying ahead. “We want to be leaders in this space,” she said. “AI is transforming education, and we’re ensuring UC is at the forefront.”
Privacy and Accessibility at the Core
One of BearcatGPT’s standout features is its strict data privacy policy. Unlike commercial AI platforms, all interactions remain within UC’s secure environment—crucial for handling research, contracts, and academic materials.
The platform was first introduced to faculty in 2025 before expanding to students in February 2026. Since then, users have developed study aids, tutoring tools, and more. Soon, a new feature will help faculty adapt coursework for students with disabilities, further enhancing accessibility.
A Vision for the Future
Prabhakaran sees AI as a tool to unlock student creativity. “We’re mitigating risks while creating opportunities,” he said. “BearcatGPT is a cornerstone of our Bearcats AI Ready initiative, reflecting UC’s commitment to innovation.”
As AI reshapes education, UC is positioning itself as a pioneer—proving that technology, when used responsibly, can revolutionize learning.
