Kano State to Host Mass Wedding for 1,500 Couples Under Social Welfare Initiative

In a bid to support vulnerable members of society and promote social stability, the Kano State Government has announced plans to organize a mass wedding for 1,500 couples. This initiative, locally known as “Auren Gata” (meaning “mass wedding” in Hausa), is part of the state’s Marriage Social Welfare Programme under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf. The event marks the latest effort by the government to assist individuals in starting families while addressing societal challenges.

Mujahideen Aminudeen, Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, revealed the details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday. According to Aminudeen, the decision to proceed with the mass wedding follows the success of previous editions of the programme, which have positively impacted communities across the state.

“This initiative is designed to provide support to those who wish to marry but face financial or social barriers,” Aminudeen explained. “The government is committed to ensuring that all necessary arrangements are finalized by the end of May.”

The programme is open to couples who voluntarily express their willingness to marry and meet specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must obtain endorsements from traditional leaders in their communities and demonstrate mutual consent to live together as husband and wife. Once approved, they will undergo a series of medical screenings, including tests for HIV, genotype compatibility, and other health checks. Women applicants will also undergo pregnancy tests to ensure transparency and dignity.

Aminudeen emphasized that the programme is entirely voluntary and dismissed allegations that the Hisbah Board imposes marriages on participants or selects beneficiaries without due process. “Participation is based on mutual consent and willingness from both parties,” he said. “We ensure that all processes are transparent and adhere to Islamic principles.”

The mass wedding initiative is seen as a practical approach to addressing societal issues such as poverty, social instability, and delayed marriages in the state. By providing financial and logistical support, the government aims to reduce the burden on couples and their families while fostering stronger community ties.

Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration has prioritized this programme as part of its broader social welfare agenda. Previous editions of “Auren Gata” have reportedly helped hundreds of couples start families, with beneficiaries praising the initiative for its impact on their lives.

As preparations for the event gather momentum, the Kano State Government has urged eligible individuals to complete the necessary documentation and medical checks promptly. Traditional leaders and community stakeholders have also been mobilized to ensure smooth coordination.

The mass wedding is expected to draw significant attention, not only within Kano State but also across Nigeria, as a unique example of government-driven social intervention. For the 1,500 couples set to participate, it represents a life-changing opportunity to begin their marital journey with the support of their community and state.
