Suicide bombing and armed clashes escalate as rebel groups seize control of Kidal amid rising instability.

Bamako, Mali – April 26, 2026

Mali’s Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed in a suicide truck bombing at his residence in Kati, a heavily fortified town near the capital Bamako, in one of several coordinated attacks by jihadist groups on Saturday. The assault also claimed the lives of Camara’s second wife and two grandchildren, according to local media reports.

The attack came amid a broader offensive targeting military and government figures, including an assassination attempt on General Assimi Goïta, the leader of Mali’s ruling junta. Goïta was evacuated from his Kati residence unharmed and is reportedly “alive and well in a secure location,” as confirmed by Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque, a veteran reporter on Malian affairs.

Escalating Violence Across Mali

The attacks mark one of the most significant escalations in Mali’s ongoing conflict, with strikes reported from the northern regions to the capital. Rebel factions involved include al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

By Sunday, clashes had intensified in Kidal, a strategic northern city, where FLA fighters—backed by JNIM militants—engaged Malian army troops and Russian mercenaries. The FLA later claimed full control of Kidal, announcing a deal for the withdrawal of Russian Africa Corps soldiers. A local resident told AFP they witnessed a military convoy leaving but could not confirm the terms of the retreat.

Camara’s Death: A Major Blow to Mali’s Junta

Camara, described by analysts as a key power broker within Mali’s military leadership, was seen as a potential future leader. His death deals a severe blow to the junta, which has struggled to contain insurgencies since seizing power in coups in 2020 and 2021.

No official statement has been released regarding Camara’s killing, but sources suggest the attacks were meticulously planned. The use of a suicide bomber in Kati—a high-security zone—underscores the militants’ growing boldness.

Regional Fallout and Rising Instability

The weekend’s violence highlights Mali’s deepening crisis, exacerbated by the junta’s reliance on Russian Wagner Group mercenaries and its strained relations with former Western allies. With jihadist and separatist factions gaining ground, fears of further destabilization loom.

As armed groups patrol Kidal’s streets, civilians brace for prolonged conflict. Meanwhile, regional leaders and international observers warn of a potential spillover into neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, where similar insurgencies rage.
