Ohio Celebrates State Parks Week with Free Outdoor Adventures and New Eco-Center Opening
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has officially proclaimed April 20–26 as Ohio State Parks Week, encouraging residents to explore the state’s natural treasures. The weeklong celebration highlights the 76 state parks managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), offering free access to hiking, camping, fishing, and more.
“Our parks are among Ohio’s greatest assets,” DeWine said. “Whether you’re looking for a quiet trail, a family camping trip, or a day on the water, there’s something for everyone—and it’s all free.”
A Week of Outdoor Exploration
Ohio’s diverse landscapes—from dense forests to sprawling lakes—provide endless recreational opportunities. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted echoed the sentiment, urging Ohioans to visit both favorite parks and new destinations.
A key highlight of the week is the grand opening of the Eco-Discovery Center at Salt Fork State Park on April 22 (Earth Day) at 10 a.m. The new facility aims to educate visitors on local ecosystems and conservation efforts.
Why Ohio’s Parks Stand Out
Unlike many states, Ohio does not charge entrance fees for its parks, making outdoor recreation accessible to all. Mary Mertz, ODNR Director, emphasized the system’s uniqueness: “With 76 parks, Ohioans have no excuse not to get outside. Each park offers something special, whether it’s wildlife watching, boating, or just a peaceful walk in nature.”
