Terrorists Attack Zamfara Village, Clash with Soldiers in Deadly Market Raid
Bagega, Zamfara State – Armed terrorists launched a violent attack on Bagega village in Nigeria’s Zamfara State on Saturday, setting fire to a military camp, looting shops, and engaging soldiers in a fierce two-hour gunfight.
The assault began when the militants attempted to take control of the bustling weekly market, a key trading hub in the region. Soldiers stationed in the area quickly responded, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that forced residents to flee in panic.
Military Camp Set Ablaze, Civilians Injured
Witnesses reported that the attackers, arriving in large numbers, initially retreated before regrouping and striking again. In a brazen move, they infiltrated the village through an alternate route, torching part of a military camp and destroying two military vehicles.
“The bandits came from all directions,” a local resident told reporters, with gunshots audible in the background during the call. “They looted shops, stealing phones and drinks before fleeing.”
At least two soldiers were wounded in the clashes, while several civilians sustained injuries. A traditional ruler, speaking anonymously for safety reasons, claimed that many terrorists were also killed, though their bodies were reportedly taken away by their comrades.
Gold-Rich Region Under Siege
Bagega, located near dense forests spanning Kebbi and Niger states, has long been a hotspot for bandit activity. The area’s gold and mineral wealth make it a prime target for armed groups, who frequently raid villages and ambush security forces.
Northern Nigeria has faced escalating violence since 2011, with thousands killed and millions displaced. The latest attack underscores the persistent security crisis crippling the region, despite military efforts to curb terrorist operations.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Repeated attempts to reach the military spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
