Renowned Gynecologist Dr. Job Obwaka Dies of Cardiac Arrest Amid Poisoning Probe
Nairobi, Kenya — The sudden death of Dr. Job Obwaka, a celebrated gynecologist and board member of The Nairobi Hospital, has been confirmed as cardiac arrest following a postmortem examination. However, the circumstances surrounding his passing remain shrouded in mystery, with investigators probing a potential poisoning case.
The autopsy, conducted earlier this week, identified cardiac arrest as the primary cause of death, according to family spokesperson Joseph Ndungu. “The findings confirm that Dr. Obwaka died of cardiac arrest,” Ndungu stated, offering some clarity to the family and the medical community mourning the loss of the 83-year-old veteran obstetrician.
Despite the autopsy’s conclusion, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are pursuing further inquiries. Preliminary investigations suggest that Dr. Obwaka may have been poisoned at the residence of Beatrice Wangari, a 45-year-old woman from Kitengela. Wangari, described as a person of interest, was arrested and arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts after spending three days in police custody.
Authorities allege that Wangari was the last person seen with Dr. Obwaka before he collapsed. Prosecutors have requested an additional 14 days to complete their investigation, including toxicological tests and mental assessments.
In an affidavit submitted to the court, investigators revealed that samples collected from Wangari’s residence in Milimani Estate will undergo forensic analysis to determine whether poisoning occurred. The prosecution emphasized the need for thorough testing, stating, “There are certain samples that are to be forwarded to the government analyst, and further examinations may be required.”
However, Wangari’s defense team has vehemently denied the allegations, arguing that no evidence of poisoning was found during a police search of her home. Her lawyer criticized the investigation as speculative and sensational, telling the court, “Your Honor, this affidavit is full of innuendos, alarmism, and sensationalism.”
The defense also highlighted that Wangari had acted swiftly to assist Dr. Obwaka after he collapsed at her residence. “She raised him upon his collapse and immediately arranged for his transport to Nairobi Hospital. Her only mistake seems to be being present when the doctor passed away,” her lawyer argued.
Dr. Obwaka’s death has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s medical community, where he was revered for his decades of service and expertise in gynecology. As a board member of The Nairobi Hospital, he played a pivotal role in shaping healthcare policies and improving maternal care across the country.
While the autopsy has provided some closure, the ongoing investigation leaves unanswered questions about the events leading to his death. Authorities have yet to confirm whether foul play was involved, and the case remains under intense scrutiny.
The tragic incident underscores the complexities surrounding high-profile deaths and the challenges of balancing sensitive investigations with public accountability. As detectives continue their work, both the family and the public await further developments in this unfolding story.
