Kenya Braces for Week-Long Heavy Rainfall, Flood Warnings Issued
Nairobi, May 8, 2024 — Kenya is set to experience intensified rainfall over the next several days, prompting the Kenya Meteorological Department to issue urgent flood and landslide warnings. The downpour, expected to begin Thursday evening and last through next week, could bring significant disruptions across multiple regions.
Heavy Downpours Expected
The weather agency forecasts that between May 8 and May 14, several parts of the country will receive more than 20mm of rain within 24-hour periods. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated between May 10 and May 13 before gradually easing.
Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and parts of Nairobi are among the most vulnerable areas. Counties such as Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Narok, and Uasin Gishu have been specifically flagged for potential flooding. Enhanced rainfall is also expected in Turkana, Samburu, Kajiado, and Machakos counties.
Risks of Flooding and Landslides
Authorities have warned that even areas not directly hit by heavy rain could face flooding, particularly downstream regions. Flash floods, reduced visibility, and landslides pose serious threats, especially in hilly and low-lying zones.
Residents near the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya slopes have been urged to exercise extreme caution due to the heightened risk of landslides. The Meteorological Department has advised against walking or driving through moving water and discouraged seeking shelter under trees or near metal structures during storms to avoid lightning strikes.
Emergency Preparedness Underway
Government agencies, disaster response teams, and county authorities are on high alert as Kenya prepares for possible weather-related emergencies. The public has been urged to stay updated on weather advisories and follow safety guidelines.
“Please remain vigilant for potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility,” the advisory emphasized.
With the rainy season already causing disruptions in parts of the country, the coming days could test Kenya’s disaster response capabilities. Residents in high-risk zones are advised to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.
