Nigerian Forces Repel Boko Haram Attack in Borno, Two Soldiers Killed
Borno State, Nigeria – In a fierce early morning confrontation on Thursday, Nigerian troops successfully repelled an attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents on a military base in Magumeri Local Government Area, Borno State. Two soldiers were killed in the clash, while several terrorists were neutralized, according to military officials.
The incident occurred at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Magumeri, approximately 46 kilometers from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, tasked with countering insurgency in the region, played a pivotal role in thwarting the attack.
The Attack and Military Response
The terrorists reportedly attempted to infiltrate the base under the cover of poor visibility, aiming to exploit vulnerabilities. Despite breaching an isolated section of the camp, the troops responded swiftly and decisively. In a statement issued on Friday, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed the details of the encounter.
“Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI successfully contained the attack by ISWAP terrorists on Forward Operating Base Magumeri under Sector 3,” the statement read. “Although the terrorists recorded minor breaches, our troops fought gallantly, neutralizing scores of them and decisively repelling the assault.”
Casualties and Aftermath
The military confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives during the battle, while an officer and several other personnel sustained injuries. The wounded are reportedly in stable condition and receiving medical care.
In the aftermath of the clash, troops conducted exploitation operations in the surrounding area, uncovering extensive blood trails and abandoned bodies of terrorists, indicating significant casualties among the attackers. They also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles, and magazines.
The exchange of fire damaged some military equipment and temporary structures at the base. However, troops remain on high alert, continuing operations to consolidate their gains and assess further battle damage.
A Test of Resilience
This attack marks the latest in a series of confrontations between Nigerian forces and insurgent groups in the northeast. Boko Haram and ISWAP have been active in the region for over a decade, carrying out frequent assaults on military installations and civilian communities.
Despite the challenges, Lt. Col. Uba emphasized the resilience and determination of Nigerian troops. “The failed attack underscores the fighting spirit of Operation HADIN KAI in denying terrorists freedom of action across the theater of operations,” he said. “The Military High Command commends the troops for their impressive performance and urges them to sustain the operational tempo.”
A Broader Context
Magumeri, located in Borno State, has been a hotspot for insurgent activity, with frequent attacks targeting both military and civilian infrastructure. The region remains a focal point in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism.
The Nigerian military has intensified its operations in recent months, aiming to dismantle insurgent networks and restore stability to the northeast. However, the persistence of such attacks highlights the complex security challenges facing the country.
As the nation mourns the loss of its soldiers, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by security forces in the fight against terrorism. The Nigerian military continues to call for public support and vigilance as it works to safeguard lives and property in the region.
