BRVM Stocks Rally as Sucrivoire Soars 21% Despite Losses, Oragroup Tumbles

May 8, 2026 – The BRVM (Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières) closed the week on a high note, with all four equity indices posting gains amid surging trading volumes. The composite index rose 0.5% to 404.59 points, extending its year-to-date climb to 17%—one of the strongest performances in sub-Saharan Africa this year.

Investors Bet on Recovery, Punish Dividend Holdouts

The standout performer was Sucrivoire, which skyrocketed 21% despite reporting a staggering 6.1 billion FCFA loss for 2025—a sharp reversal from its 2.6 billion FCFA profit the previous year. Analysts suggest traders are banking on a future rebound rather than current fundamentals, pushing the stock’s year-to-date surge to 127%.

Meanwhile, SITAB Côte d’Ivoire, buoyed by strong earnings, gained another 9%, becoming the second-most traded stock by value.

However, not all stocks shared the optimism. Oragroup Togo plunged 22% after withholding dividends despite returning to profitability—a move that angered income-focused investors. Tractafric Motors and Bernabe CI also suffered, dropping 20% and 17%, respectively, following disappointing full-year results.

Bond Market Sees Steady Growth

The fixed-income segment expanded, with market capitalization rising 1.5% to 12,325 billion FCFA ($22 billion). A Senegalese sovereign bond dominated trading, accounting for nearly 60% of the week’s bond transactions.

Key Takeaways: Speculation vs. Fundamentals

The BRVM’s rally highlights a split market: some stocks soar on hope-driven bets, while others crash on pragmatic concerns. Sucrivoire’s surge, despite heavy losses, underscores the exchange’s thin liquidity—where sentiment can overshadow financial reality.

Conversely, Oragroup’s nosedive reflects investor frustration over missed dividend expectations, a critical factor in the BRVM’s appeal. Sonatel Senegal, the most traded stock, remains a bellwether for regional confidence.

With trading volumes doubling from the prior week, the BRVM shows signs of growing activity, though it still lags behind larger emerging markets in daily turnover.
