South Africa’s President Ramaphosa Dismisses Social Development Minister Amid Scandal

President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken decisive action by dismissing Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, following allegations of misconduct and improper use of public resources. The announcement, made on Thursday, 14 May, underscores the government’s commitment to accountability amid growing public scrutiny.

In a formal statement, the Presidency confirmed Tolashe’s removal under Section 91(2) of the Constitution, citing the need for urgent leadership changes in the portfolio. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, has been appointed as the acting Social Development Minister until a permanent replacement is named.

The decision comes on the heels of investigative reports by Daily Maverick, which revealed troubling details about Tolashe’s tenure. Among the allegations, Tolashe allegedly accepted two luxury Chinese SUVs in late 2023, purportedly as donations for the ANC Women’s League. However, she failed to disclose the gifts to Parliament, raising questions about transparency and ethical conduct.

Further revelations added fuel to the fire. Daily Maverick uncovered that a state-funded “food aide” assigned to Tolashe’s department was redirected to work at her private residence in East London. Additionally, the aide was reportedly instructed to transfer R7,000 monthly to Tolashe’s daughter’s account, ostensibly to cover household expenses. These disclosures have sparked widespread outrage and demands for accountability.

The swift removal of Tolashe signals President Ramaphosa’s efforts to uphold integrity within his administration. However, the scandal has also reignited debates about governance and ethical standards in South Africa’s political landscape. Civil society groups and opposition parties have called for a thorough investigation into the allegations, urging the government to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Sindisiwe Chikunga’s interim appointment brings experience and stability to the Social Development portfolio. Known for her work advocating for marginalized groups, Chikunga is expected to restore confidence in the department during this transitional period.

This high-profile dismissal highlights the challenges facing South Africa’s leadership as it grapples with corruption and mismanagement. Public trust in government institutions remains fragile, and incidents like this underscore the need for transparency and adherence to ethical standards.

As the story continues to unfold, Daily Maverick is expected to provide further updates and analysis on the events leading to Tolashe’s dismissal. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability in public office, with implications for South Africa’s political future.
