Small Plane Crash in Akron Claims Two Lives, Leaves Family Homeless
Akron, Ohio — A tragic plane crash shook the quiet Canterbury Circle neighborhood on Thursday, claiming the lives of a pilot and a flight instructor. The small aircraft spiraled out of the sky, crashing into a family home and igniting a massive fire, authorities confirmed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred around 1,000 feet above ground. The plane struck the road before colliding with the house, causing catastrophic damage.
“The airplane impacted the home, exploded, and a significant post-crash fire ensued,” said NTSB aviation accident investigator Aaron McCarter. He noted that the aircraft was performing a second approach when something caused it to destabilize. Witnesses and doorbell cameras captured the plane spiraling before the crash.
The home’s owner, Colton “C.J.” Laudato, acted swiftly to save his two young children and their dog. Neighbor Jacob Young recounted the harrowing moments, praising Laudato’s quick thinking.
“When the moment requires it, you can do incredible things,” Young said. “C.J. got his family out of the house immediately. It’s one of those situations where you start thinking about all the what-ifs and how much worse it could have been.”
The community has rallied around the Laudato family, whose home is now uninhabitable. Discussions about setting up a GoFundMe page and organizing donations are already underway.
“Our neighborhood here at Coventry Crossing is awesome,” Young added. “People are already asking how they can help. We’re rallying together to support them in any way we can.”
McCarter emphasized that the investigation could take over a year, as officials examine potential causes, including mechanical failure or engine issues. Despite the grim circumstances, he acknowledged the miracle that the Laudato family escaped unharmed.
“We still have two deceased pilots, and that’s a tragedy,” McCarter said. “But these three individuals have quite a story. The fact they made it out is the good news here.”
The NTSB is transporting the wreckage to Akron Fulton Airport for further analysis. Meanwhile, the tight-knit community of Akron continues to process the shock of the incident while focusing on supporting the Laudato family during this difficult time.
